MARY ANNA BROWN | STUDIO RR 5A

PAINTING

From an early age, Mary Anna Brown had an interest in domestic spaces.

Brown has vivid memories of flipping through the glossy pages of her grandmother’s magazines, especially Good Housekeeping and Southern Living – experiences that nurtured my love of utilizing found imagery and collage in my work and particular fondness for the aesthetic of mid-century architecture and interior design.

Brown’s current work is a combination of these two interests – layered mixed media pieces that combine collage made primarily from vintage print media with paint and drawings of mid-century dwellings. The work invites the viewer to look beyond the painted image to see beneath the surface where there may be observed a bit of nostalgia, family life, and even humor.
