Doug Barrett – The Vanishing Point of Our Frontier
October 2 - November 23
Second Floor Connector Gallery
This exhibition round includes works provided by Doug Barrett which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from October 2 – November 23 2024. Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public. The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out, enjoy a pleasant evening, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you! The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday, November 23 from 5-7 pm.
About the exhibit:
The title of this body of work is taken from Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life. He proposes that seeing the landscape (during modern modes of travel like a train ride) is like the rubbing together of two picture planes and we experience those images at the exact point of creation, right before they vanish; de Certeau calls the train “a tireless shifter,” always creating and destroying the landscape outside the window. In this body of work Barrett explores roadside imagery, captured in that dreamlike moment; a glimpse caught in the rearview mirror of the mind; looking back at the moment of destruction.
