brad posey

February 7 - March 30

First Floor West Gallery

This exhibition round includes works provided by Brad Posey which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from February 7  – March 30, 2024.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out, enjoy a pleasant evening, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday, March 30 from 5-7 pm.

About the exhibit:

“Stray Gods” is a collection of mixed media I’ve been slowly building since 2016. This series came in fits and starts. Often I am completely inactive for weeks or months at a time only to then lock in and produce multiple pieces at once. I’d like to compare my creative process to jazz improvisation but it’s more accurately and truthfully like a punk band trying to grab shapes out of the air before they fly away. “Stray Gods” is inspired by primitive images, tribal art, comic books, death metal, science fiction, accidents, hip hop, movies, mistakes, cartoons, cave drawings and graffiti.  I have borrowed heavily from Robert Pollard and Jean Michel Basquiat. There is a Japanese phrase, wabi-sabi, it describes appreciating things of beauty that are imperfect or incomplete. I’d like to think that applies to my overall aesthetic. With “Stray Gods” it was more important to reach or glimpse than grasp or hold. I don’t need to know, I just need to try.

About the artist:

My name is Brad Posey. I was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1972. I am not formally educated as an artist but have, since childhood, been driven to create, whether it be music or poetry or art. I have made and sold many pieces over the years but that’s not how I make my living. I work for the Facilities and Maintenance Department at UAH as a painter. So, I get a little practice every day. I host a local radio show on 89.3 WLRH called The Invisible City. I play rather infrequently with several local bands, Red Mud, Wrong Brothers, Boneyard Mafia and UFOMG. Music was the gateway to art for me. I would spend hours staring at album covers. Art is a relaxing and soothing practice. It’s not about having a goal or achieving a certain outcome but more of a process and a way to lose yourself in the experience. I work in mixed media, collage and painting. Sometimes I add digital effects. I’ve used pencil, pen, magic marker, crayon, paint, tape, found materials, garbage, magazines, NyQuil, coffee and even dirt. My method is exploratory. I work by instinct until I feel I’ve reached some kind of configuration or conclusion.
