First Floor Ramp Gallery

This exhibition round includes works provided by Alexandria Chrisman which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from February 7  – March 30, 2024.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out, enjoy a pleasant evening, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday, March 30 from 5-7 pm.

About the exhibit:

I need to feel more vulnerable.
I feel the most vulnerable when I feel small.
A murmuration of starlings is an event that makes me feel small because it is out of my control. Starlings are vulnerable creatures because they are small, which is why they flock together to appear larger against predators. Murmurations only happen before dusk and it makes them vulnerable to time. Cyanotype is a vulnerable medium with time because the print must remain for an amount of time under the sun before the image is revealed. The unknown risk of failure is a vulnerable process. The time of the murmurations is ephemeral. I must be present in their moment. Time is a giant hovering over me and reminds me of how vulnerable I really am.

About the artist:

Alexandria Chrisman is an art teacher at West Limestone High School. She is from Florence, Alabama. She draws images and uses them to print with Cyanotype as well as natural materials. Her work consists of painted skate decks with drawn images using acrylic paint. Some of the drawn images contain quotes from lonesome poets or song lyrics from old heartbreaker legends like Slim Whitman, Brenda Lee and The Carter Family. She graduated from the University of North Alabama with a degree in Education. She is both committed to the arts as a profession and lifestyle.
