Let’s Make a Poem Comic!

What do comics and poetry have in common? LOTS!

Something strange happens when we are confronted with a combination of image and text- our brains look for the ways they mingle to create meaning.  Poems utilize language in unexpected ways, creating vivid associations in our mind. Similarly comics take panels of visuals and text, using sequence and closure in the reader’s mind to create context and meaning.

How far can you stretch a reader’s mind by pairing words and images? What kinds of new associations can we make between pairs of words and pictures?  How do we find that unexpected connection- the one we know is just right, but also- something we never would have dreamed up?

In this workshop we’ll play with making 4 panel poem comics- even if you don’t write poetry, or you’ve never made a comic- you can play with the endless associations that come from pairing up words and images- no experience necessary!

Supplies:

Instructor will provide clipboards, paper, drawing materials, and collage materials.  Participants are welcome to bring their own favorite drawing materials too!

This class is free and open to the public, but we appreciate if you register in advance by email robertdaniel@lowemill.art so that we can know how many folks are interested.  We will also provide directions to the space if you haven’t been there before and can answer questions.
