Jhane Kunkel is a Kubert School graduate whose focus was on traditional animation and comic book illustration (narrative arts). While in attendance, she met her future husband Don Kunkel, a comic book artist (also located in Studio 313), and completed a tattoo apprenticeship at Tattoo 46 (Dover, NJ) that helped her to afford to eat while finishing art school.

After school (2005), Jhane dove into tattooing full time for years till she and Don had their two sons entering full day schooling. Evenings and weekends being the main hours of operation lead her to end her tattoo career and focus more on freelance in an attempt to keep creative anxiety to a minimum.

She then moved into a career in Parks and Recreation because, “let’s face it, art and nature just pair well together don’t they?” It got her and her family outside together and in a constant supply of inspiration.

The occasional freelance work never stopped; Jhane over the years has completed two murals, tons of painted skateboards, small animation segments (Night of the Living Dead Reanimated), illustrations for prints, color-work for comic books (The Hardway, Zombie of the Month, Vigilante Granny), built custom box lanterns, fiber art pieces, but some of her favorite projects still remain trading card sets with her husband Don (Marvel Masterpieces, Thor Ragnok, Dynamite Comics, Transformers, Red Sonja, 5-finite, and so on).

Now, freshly moved to Huntsville, she and Don are trying to use the studio space to figure out what having real time and space for creating looks and feels like again now that both of their  boys are practically out of the house. She is building box lanterns (with the original art panels on each side), up-cycling Legos into earrings, knitting and crocheting, and illustrating. She jests that she “works on what her ADHD allows her each day” and has the end goal of creating a gift shop full of her musings.

It’s so important to me and exciting to continue to learn and grow; with the special community cultivated here (Lowe Mill A&E), it feels like the right time and place to safely continue to do so.
