SUMMARY:Robby Melvin - Volume of Movements
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Robby Melvin which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nVolume of Movements is a five piece series inspired by the core elements in my life- music\, love\, triumph\, failure and growth through said movements. These motions inspire and evoke the physical movement of paint on canvas that becomes a panacea in color\, shape and texture.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAs a young man\, Robby chose the Culinary Arts as his life work. In 2020\, after stepping away from Chef life\, Robby began transitioning his creative energy into a different kind of art. Plates shifted to canvases; layers of color and texture replaced the aromas of food; and new ways to process life’s experiences were born. Art has always chosen Robby\, whether in the kitchen or in the studio\, and while the forms may be different\, the results are the same. \n

SUMMARY:The Eclectic Frog Collective - The Odd\, The Weird\, The Queer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by The Eclectic Frog Collective which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit: \nThe Weird\, The Odd\, The Queer  \nOnce meant to wound\, these words have become a mirror. \nOdd. Weird. Queer. \nI’ve worn them all—and now I wear them with purpose. \nThis exhibit is a meditation on otherness. \nIt asks us to see with new eyes\, to question the boundaries of belonging\, and to find beauty in what defies convention. \nIt holds space for grief and becoming—for memory\, mystery\, and transformation. \nTo be odd is to walk a path all your own. \nTo be weird is to bend the pattern into something new. \nTo be queer is to live truthfully without waiting for permission. \nThe Weird\, The Odd\, The Queer is a tribute to those who came before: the rebels\, the romantics\, the survivors. It is a celebration of queer existence in all its complexity\, and a call to Resist\, Remember & Rise.  \n  \n About the Artists: \nThe Eclectic Frog Collective is a queer-led group of Southern artists who explore themes of transformation\, resistance\, and survival through mixed media\, sculpture\, photography\, installation\, and performance. \nLed by Aaron Kilgore—from Studio RR5A at Lowe Mill A&E\, the collective blends political urgency with honest personal stories. Their work invites you to see the beauty that grows on the margins. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis - Landscapes in Paint and Metal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n  \nThe collaborative exhibit of new work by sculptor Steve Davis and painter Lorrie Lane is all about the southern landscape\, a place filled with trees\, rivers\, lakes\, and humid skies. Davis’s tree and leaf forms seem to move and twist organically\, reflecting the abundant natural growth present in Alabama. Lane’s focus on tree-lined water edges is more about the memory of a moment by the river than a specific place. Informed by the Transcendentalists\, filtered through a contemporary art point of view\, their shared vision creates a contemplative space for appreciating the natural world. \n  \nAbout the artists: \nLorrie Lane is an oil painter living in Tuscaloosa\, AL. She is the owner of Lorrie Lane Studio\, a fine art studio and gallery located in downtown Tuscaloosa. Lane has been painting and exhibiting for over 30 years. Her work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows in the Southeast. She has been represented by galleries in Alabama\, Tennessee\, Georgia\, Florida\, New York\, and Oregon. Her art agent is Victor Fine Art (www.victorfineart.com) and has reproductions through John -Richard. \nAs part of her art career\, Lane has taught art classes with the Birmingham Museum of Art Studio School\, the Alabama Prison Art and Education Project\, and The University of Alabama OLLI program. She was a resident studio artist at the Kentuck Art Center in Northport\, AL from 2010 to 2013 and again from 2016 to 2018. \nLane’s most recent solo exhibits include a show at the Columbus\, MS Arts Council Gallery in 2023 and a dual exhibit with sculptor Steve Davis in 2023 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment in Huntsville\, AL. \nLorrie Lane was born in upstate New York in 1961. After graduating from Smith College in 1983\, she and husband Alan moved to Tuscaloosa\, AL. Their daughter Liz Lane carries on the painting profession. Their sons Charles and Sean are also involved in creative endeavors. \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \nSteve Davis\, born 1951 in Columbus\, OH. Davis earned a B.S. degree from The OhioState University. He’s made objects a good part of his life in a wide variety of media. \nDavis established his studio\, Sunheart Metalworks\, in Northport\, AL in 1993. In his work with metals\, he employs traditional and contemporary metalworking techniques. This work involves passion\, intellect\, and full-force physical input. His pieces range from the sublime to the humorous. Davis enjoys solving the logistical nightmares of large-scale sculptures and public works projects. \nDavis has been a member of the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America since its early days. He is also a member of the Alabama Forge Council. \nInstagram \n

SUMMARY:Austen Omar - The Dark Era
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Austen Omar which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from February 12 – April 26\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, April 26 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit \n “The Dark Era” represents the last 5 years going through the ups and downs of my life through art\, its an amalgamation of what I view represents my headspace over the past half decade\, the Mixed Media pieces were made with a combination of images sourced from used books\, personal drawings\, and print outs of my digital pieces.  \nBefore creating visual media\, music was my sole form of expression. In the chaos of my childhood I turned to music to let out my emotions in a healthy form of self expression. In my musical journey I wanted to make art for my albums\, and that’s how this gallery came to be. They’re reflections of the darkness\, the deepest depths of despair\, anguish\, freedom\, and love\, much like my music has been for me going on for years now. Best way I would describe the style of my work would be psychotic psychedelic. Through brutal imagery\, vivid colors\, and kaleidoscopic styles I bring these hallucinatory images to life. They reflect the deepest parts of myself. Everyday I continuously strive to push my art in all its forms to new lengths. \n  \nAbout the Artist \n I’m Austen Omar\, I’m a musician and artist (although I normally like to say I just make noises and colors) from Huntsville\, AL. I use music and art as a cathartic expression of chaotic thoughts. I consider the things I create to be better representations of myself than what I can describe in words\, for better or worse.  \nIf you like my art and are curious about more of my works\, you can find more HERE \n

SUMMARY:Cristina Byrne - Lights Out
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Cristina Byrne which will be on view in from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit:   \nTaking “the long way home” means starting on University Drive in Huntsville and ending at the New Kroger on HWY 72 in Madison\, Ala. I refer to this asphalt strip as the “Who’s Who Highway” of fast-food restaurants and big box stores.  \nWhile driving down one night\, I noticed a couple of Hooters letters out\, and one said\, ‘ters.’ I got such a kick out of it that I photographed it.  \nEvery once in a while\, I drive down this strip to see if any lights are out. And let me say that the Who’s Who Highway never fails to have a light or two out. Now\, it has become some sort of a hunt.  \nI hope you enjoyed these as much as I had fun finding them.  \n*These were all taken in the Huntsville/ Madison\, Alabama\, area except for Macy’s\, JCPenney\, and On the Border\, which were taken in Allentown\, PA.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nHi! I am Cristina Byrne. I like to use a camera to express\, highlight\, and bring attention to certain things I see.  \nThroughout college\, I would walk around with a point-and-shoot and photograph college parties. Still\, I only started getting serious about it once I took a seasonal job with the Binghamton Mets\, The Double-A MiLB affiliate to the New York Mets\, as their Creative/Marketing Assistant\, where I was also the fan photographer during the 2012 season. There\, I fell in love with capturing the atmosphere of minor-league baseball.  \nYou can find me running around Toyota Field as the Rocket City Trash Pandas Team Photographer and managing the assignment desk at WHNT News 19. \n  \nInstagram:  @cristinarbyrne \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)

SUMMARY:Zero Space Collective - PLY
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Zero Space Collective which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from October 2 – November 23 2024.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 23 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n“At the beginning\, you work with materials; you don’t know them very well\, and you try to get them to do what you think you want them to do. As time goes on you understand the way to make them do what they want to do\, but your way.”\nSheila Hicks\nFrom: Ford Foundation\, “Begin with Thread” \nFocusing on material as a collaborator\, the works on display in PLY simultaneously present both sides of the sculptural process: the steadfast forcing of and ultimate surrendering to one’s own materials. In some instances\, the body dictates the ultimate form of the material- in others the material forces its own hand\, changing the final form of the finished work beyond what the artist originally intended. The artists represented in PLY (gathered from across the country) all share a dedication to the study of materiality as well as rigorous individual studio practices. \n  \nAbout the collective:  \nZero Space Collective is a contemporary artist collective with a network across the Eastern US. Our goal is to create space for underrepresented contemporary artists both virtually as well as physically through exhibition opportunities and digital platforms. Our greatest endeavor is to find ways to create inclusivity\, equity\, and accessibility within the collective. We aim to facilitate advocacy for marginalized populations and dismantle harmful and exclusive social constructions and institutional powers. Our goal is to hold ourselves and each other accountable by working collectively to uphold and maintain our values while acknowledging and challenging our inequities and biases and working toward the direction of social change. \n\n\n\n\n\nCollective Website:\nhttps://www.zerospacecollective.com/\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nParticipating artists: \nRebecca Fulmer \nAudrey Pinto \nLaura Esbensen \nKathryn Mahler \nHeather Baumbach \nJessica Swank \nLauren Bradshaw \nAmalya Megerman \nAshley Rabanal \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.) \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by organizer Kerrigan Casey which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from July 31 – September 28\, 2024. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 28 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThis project\, a collaborative effort among Black artists based in Alabama\, transforms archival documents from Alabama’s death row into a traveling multi-and mixed media art exhibit. Centering visual and audio artifacts from people on death row as well as their surviving loved ones\, the exhibit focuses on various forms of resistance to capital punishment in the state that sentences more people to death per capita than any other. \nOur work allows us to bring a community of artists together to collaborate with people on death row and members of the community to show a different reflection of how people on death row are treated and represented. We want all of us to have the opportunity to create art but this project allows us to create change over time with relationship-building and learning together how we can transform public opinion and eventually state legislation. Community-based artmaking is important because that is the core in developing social change. We model how we want to come together to build on common concerns and shared interests. \nThe project works toward healing\, equity\, and racial justice by highlighting the ways in which the current system disrupts\, harms\, and traumatizes communities\, particularly communities of color. It relies on abolitionist frameworks as well as participatory action frameworks that involve and center communities who are most impacted by a social problem. It also relies on a framework of mutual aid through which people come together to share their talents and resources to work toward greater social and political change. In this case\, artists are offering their talents\, and those impacted by the death penalty are offering their experiences and artifacts\, to work toward abolition together. \n  \nAbout the organizer: \nKerrigan Casey is a Florence\, Alabama native\, artist\, community organizer\, and a trailblazer in the realm of socially-engaged art. The cultural barriers  she faced as a black woman growing  up in the rural south have fostered the deep connection she has with her art\, which centers black culture\, relationship-building\, and community power.  She works as an independent artist as well as a  project manager\, developing art installations that create impactful conversations about race\, policy\, and systemic inequity. This exhibit centers visual and audio artifacts from people on death row as well as their surviving loved ones\, the exhibit focuses on various forms of resistance to capital punishment in the state that sentences more people to death per capita than any other state. \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)
