SUMMARY:John Simmons - A Ritual of Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by John Simmons which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nJohn Simmons is a collage artist born and raised in Jacksonville\, AL. Years of experimenting with old magazines\, found ephemera\, and personal mark-making led him to discover that the simple act of cutting\, tearing\, and reassembling was a form of personal alchemy. Each piece is born from a spontaneous gesture rather than a preconceived concept. \nHis work is rooted in catharsis through process. He enjoys taking bits and pieces of contrasting shapes\, textures\, and colors to create a wholly new identity. The studio becomes a zone of release\, where time collapses and decisions are made in the moment. His compositions emerge organically as he follows intuition—no underlying narrative guides the hand. The resulting collages are traces of an emotional state\, snapshots of creative necessity rather than coded symbols demanding interpretation. \nOften asked if his works contain hidden metaphors\, John insists that the art rarely carries a deeper meaning beyond the joy and urgency of creation. By stripping away intentional symbolism\, John invites viewers to experience the pure dynamism of collage\, allowing them to create their own interpretations. He views his work as an unfiltered act of creation\, a ritual of renewal. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJohn Simmons was born and raised in Jacksonville\, AL\, and graduated from Jax State University with a BFA in Graphic Design. He received 2 silver Addy’s and 1 Gold Addy for work created as an undergraduate. He has also completed the print campaign and presented work in two different gallery showcases (Leylines – National Juried Drawing Competition\, Paint Rock – Drawing Knowledge from Nature). His call to create is centered around sharing his true thoughts and feelings while striving to understand and relate to others. \nHe has a keen sense of design and its relation to form and function. His mixed media approach focuses on juxtaposition and attention to detail. His body of work displays a true purgative release of thoughtful energy that is both powerful and refined. Working to invite divergent perspectives\, his work bears witness to a melting pot of ideas and the various ways we perceive those ideas.

SUMMARY:Liz Onken - Tea in Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Liz Onken which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nTea in Istanbul is a visual diary—an abstracted love letter to a city that overwhelmed my senses and opened my eyes. This collection reflects on my time as a foreign painter immersed in the rich\, layered world of Istanbul: a place where ancient empires meet modern rhythms\, and where every street corner holds a burst of color\, scent\, or sound. \nThrough vibrant palettes\, textured surfaces\, and dynamic forms\, these works capture the chaos and cohesion of a city alive with history and daily ritual. From the deep reds of street-side spices to the pastel shimmer of tile mosaics\, from the tangled geometry of architecture to the soft intimacy of sharing tea\, each piece is a translation of sensory experience into visual language. \nThe paintings shift between representation and abstraction\, reflecting how I navigated this unfamiliar city—sometimes clearly\, sometimes intuitively. Wandering through Istanbul felt like moving through a living mosaic\, a patchwork of empires and cultures\, where cats nap beside centuries-old ruins and the scent of baklava drifts past contemporary storefronts. \nAt the heart of it all: tea. A moment of stillness and warmth amid the movement. This show is a meditation on discovery\, observation\, and the beauty of getting lost. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLiz Onken is an abstract expressionist painter based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Auburn University and continued her studies in Rome\, where she deepened her understanding of art history and traditional techniques. \nNamed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2018 by World Art Collector magazine\, Liz is known for her bold abstract paintings\, as well as her mixed media and textile-based works. Her art has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and abroad. \nAfter years of working and studying in other cities\, Liz is excited to return to her hometown\, where she continues to create and exhibit work inspired by both her Southern roots and international experiences. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Leslie Wood - Whimsy & Wonder: A Journey Through Color
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Leslie Wood which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nMy work is a reflection of emotions\, moods\, and life moments—translated onto canvas and journal pages through bold\, saturated color and whimsical forms. This exhibit is an exploration of playful curiosity and deep feeling\, where abstraction and character-driven narratives coexist. \nIn my abstract pieces\, I explore the raw language of color\, resisting the urge to define form and instead allowing emotion to dictate movement. These works are an exercise in letting go\, trusting intuition\, and embracing the unexpected. \nThe monsters\, on the other hand\, are my way of personifying feelings—quirky\, imperfect beings that carry stories within them. Their origins in upcycled materials reflect my commitment to sustainability and my belief that even discarded things hold creative potential. \nTogether\, these works serve as a visual journal—each piece a marker of time\, energy\, and experience. They invite the viewer to lose themselves in color\, to see stories in the abstract\, and to embrace both the playful and profound within their own imagination. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeslie Wood is a mixed media artist from Lacey’s Spring\, Alabama. With a background in aerospace engineering\, she later pursued art\, studying photography\, sculpture\, and pain.ng at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Blending reality and fantasy\, her work often begins in art journals before moving to canvas. She is a regular featured artist in Stampington’s ART Journaling magazine and teaches art journaling workshops online and at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Leslie also serves as the Art Director of Expressions for the mental health nonprofit Little Orange Fish\, using the arts to foster storytelling and self-expression. \n  \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:John Paul Kesling - Lean-To
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by John Paul Kesling which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from February 12 – April 26\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Sometimes temporary\, sometimes  permanent\, but always dependent. This collection of paintings tells the story of relationships at all  stages of this search for safety\, security\, and love. From longing in loneliness to first kisses and dreaming  together\, from making mistakes and growing apart to losing your lover and dying alone\, being human is  a bittersweet condition. In the end\, hopefully we all found a place to rest\, even if just for a night or two.   \n  \nAbout the artist:   \nJohn Paul Kesling (b. 1980\, USA) was born and raised in Northeastern Kentucky in the foothills of the  Appalachian Mountains. SUMMARY:Kristy Jane - Never Enough
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristy Jane which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nArtist Statement  \nI am a 47-year-old Artist/Mother/Feminist. I appreciate the danger of black widow spiders\, want to comfort anxious squirrel mothers\, and try to see a dead rat on my doorstep as a gift. I don’t want to be a bother. I want to know more than you are willing to share and am tender every chance I get. I am an outlaw. I worry I might also be a flaneur. I want more time and more places to put things. I learned color theory from red  lipstick when I was ten years old. I have knocked knees and fit best into clothing designed for women’s bodies in the 1970’s. My breasts are not self supporting. I do cartwheels and splits whenever I feel like it. My skin remembers things I don’t. I’m touchy.  \nAnd so.  \nMy hands can’t help it. They must put my mark on things to give me the drama and awe I have never gotten enough of or to dig the hole I sometimes need to put my head in. I paint because I need somewhere to put the too-muchness. I make prints because I need somewhere to leave the evidence. I let objects hold ideas too heavy for me to carry alone and I make real fake documents with my camera. It’s all more of a skin than a window–this surface where we meet.  \nI make these things for myself and to be with you.  \nThey are the howls and echoes of a feral domestic.  \n  \nBiography  \nKristy Jane thinks fast and paints slowly with rarely idle incredibly soft hands. Their impulsive visual reference system is embedded in countless layers of nuanced color systems and shameless quotes from art history tangled up with their own to an indecipherable measure. Thought of as an ideal venue for too muchness\, a love affair with oil paint has dominated their practice. However\, the work is often accompanied by objects\, videos\, and other forms of real and make-believe documentation. Through the act of painting\, Jane creates a beautiful chaos to the brink of feeling impossible as if solely for the possibility to navigate their way through it over time. Finishing is thought of as optional due to their simultaneously sticky and slippery intuitive process. Jane is unable to leave their work until the moment they recognize within it\, a complete unknown.  \nIn addition to being a lover\, a mother\, a stranger to no one\, Jane is a studio art instructor in the Department of Art\, Art History and Design at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and leaves their mark on anything that will have it. Their current studio is located in the feral space of a gestalt shift. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nInstagram:  @kristyjanesays

SUMMARY:Parks Gettys - Fins!
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Parks Gettys which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from October 2 – November 23 2024. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 23 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nFrom the artist: \nMy name is Parks Gettys and I have loved the ocean as far back as I can remember! As a kid\, my family would snorkel the jetties of the Florida panhandle\, go shrimping in the bay\, and deep sea fish off the various wrecks in the Gulf. I was enamored with sharks and octopuses\, and would draw them over and over. As I grew older\, I received my SCUBA license and had the opportunity to dive all over the Gulf of Mexico. Being in the water was truly amazing and felt like being in a different world. It is a place where all my worries melt away and I am always eager to dive back in.  \nOver the years\, my art has gone in many directions. I dabbled in 3D modeling\, portraits\, 3D printing\, animation\, and charcoal drawings. However\, I found myself always coming back to the ocean. I love showing and telling people about all the different fish in the sea and the various varieties. So naturally\, I began creating art based around sea creatures. \nDuring the last year\, I have focused on painting a variety of colorful fish for the Fins! Series and tried to add some personality into every one. Each fish is created using high-quality gouache and ink. My artistic process begins with an initial sketch in graphite\, followed by an ink outline. Next I apply layers of gouache paint depending on the fish’s color\, light direction\, and any translucency of the fins. The layers of gouache are blended together to provide a smooth transition between colors\, and the last step is re-outlining the fish in black ink and applying cross-hatch shading. Once the shading is applied the painting is complete!  \nI hope you find these paintings entertaining and spark your own interest in the ocean! It is a truly incredible part of nature and everyone should see the creatures it contains. Please do you part to keep it vibrant and clean!! \nInstagram \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.) \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 28 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nAnimals are fascinating and even if you think you know all there is to know\, you can still be surprised. My work has focused on animals for decades. Why? Maybe I’d rather hang out with animals than with people sometimes. Ok\, maybe most of the time…. \nFrom my earliest memories\, animals have been a part of my daily life.  The family dog\, an unwisely purchased rabbit (not by me)\, a pet rat from a girl that lived in my dorm\, a re-homed hedgehog that never liked us\, various reptiles that my former zoo keeper husband ended up with\, and today there is a mix of rescued cats and dogs living rent free in my home.  If you dig a little deeper\, I’ve also had some experiences that had big impacts on making me care about animals – but that’s a different story for a different show. \nThe WTF Show includes my most recent work and this time I’ve included some WTF facts about these creatures.  From the common backyard visitor to an elusive underground dweller\, I want to learn everything about all of them. This collection was inspired by animals I’ve been able to encounter in my daily suburban life\, ones I’ve visited at animal encounters and zoos\, and the specimens at the multiple natural history museums I’ve walked around in for hours.  I’ll never stop being amazed by the inhabitants of our planet.  Not the humans\, the animals. \nEnjoy! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nArtist Susan Shoemaker is a native of Birmingham\, Al and received her BFA from the University of Montevallo. Although she studied Printmaking in school\, once she left UM she found herself as a printmaker without a press\, and returned to her first love of drawing as a way of making art. This led to her creating a studio called\, “pencilpress”. \nWhen asked about her work\, Shoemaker says she finds inspiration from nature and tries to combine her concern for wildlife conservation with a little bit of humor. \n“Using animals as my primary focus in art can be tricky & I am always looking to find the balance between straightforward representation and having a sense of humor about myself and about my work. My goal is that the animals are well represented\, funny when intended\, and always portrayed in an interesting way.” \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)
