SUMMARY:Alejandra González Díaz - Seguimos Aquí | a Puerto Rican Art Show
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Alejandra González Díaz which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from November 26\, 2025 – February 28\, 2026.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 28 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nPrideful celebration meets raw historical introspection in Seguimos Aquí\, the first solo exhibit by multidisciplinary artist Alejandra González Díaz. This Puerto Rican art show has a central message: it embraces the dynamic spirit of Puerto Rican culture while inviting viewers to confront and reflect on its complex and often painful history.\nCurated with passion and purpose\, this exhibition fuses visual installations that explore both triumphant cultural narratives\, such as the preservation of traditions and indigenous ancestry\, and challenging episodes of the past\, including eugenics\, mass sterilizations\, and colonization. Witness how each artwork\, enriched by Hispanic\, Indigenous\, and African influences\, reflects a community that has transformed adversity into resilience and hope.\nAbout the artist:\nAlejandra González Díaz (b. Caguas\, Puerto Rico) is an interdisciplinary artist and model based in Atlanta\, raised in Tampa. She centers Puerto Rican culture and her life experiences in her work. Alejandra creates visual art\, developing a neo-expressionist and surrealist style across acrylic paintings\, papier-mâché masks\, and small sculptures. Influenced by artists like Frida Kahlo\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Salvador Dali\, and Gustav Klimt\, her pieces explore survival\, identity\, and communal care\, with art serving as testimony and a lifeline amid mental health and life challenges.\nAfter moving to Atlanta to pursue art full-time\, Alejandra broadened her practice to include performance‑inflected projects and collaborative shoots as extensions of her visual language. She creates art from a place of radical honesty\, inviting others to start where they are\, keep going\, and find strength in shared creativity.\n

SUMMARY:Wild Alabama - Conservation through Art: 50 Years of Wilderness in Alabama
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Wild Alabama which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nEach artist in this exhibit has a personal and profound relationship with the federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. Their paintings\, photographs\, book arts and writing are expressions of the inspiration by Alabama’s wildest places that have deeply influenced their work and their lives. The aim of this exhibit and its associated workshops\, Forest Bathing walks\, and Wilderness hikes is to bring awareness of the importance of the treasure of Wilderness for all living things\, and to advance Wild Alabama’s mission to inspire people to enjoy\, value and protect the wild places of Alabama.  \n2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act that gave us all three federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. This exhibit is a celebration of the persistent efforts of Alabamians who fought for the Act\, and the wisdom of a Congress that gave it overwhelming bipartisan support. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Garland Farwell - Stars Fell
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Garland Farwell which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nStars Fell is part of an ongoing examination of folk art and quilting as visual  narratives. Crafted from salvaged wood and tin\, the works play a role in the  preservation of memory and the acknowledgement of human experiences through  generations. It is an intersection of aesthetics and function.  \nStars Fell references ‘Stars Fell on Alabama’\, a 1934 novel by Carl Carmer about his  experiences living in Alabama as a young transplant from New York. Writing about  the people\, places\, and events he witnessed\, Carmer illuminated the ordinary and  extraordinary of Alabama. Its myths and legends alongside its everyday life. Similarly\, the Stars Fell exhibit pays homage to Alabama in that the raw material of  the work was found here only. Each board and slat bears witness and tells many  stories. It is my hope that the work reflects back the experiences of multitudes.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAfter many years working as a theater and puppetry artist in New York City I  journeyed to the Alabama Black Belt to explore Folk Art\, Rural Art\, and Outsider Art.  In this journey I’ve found great inspiration and discovered new creative paths. An  intended two-month stay in rural Alabama has morphed into more than 16 years.  My art practice has transformed to reflect this new environment. By adapting the  practical and humble approach to life and creativity of the people of the rural south\,  my process has become more streamlined and the work\, while encountering its  share of challenges\, flows more effortlessly.  \nWhile art and design traditions such as quilting and hex sign painting are major  influences on my work\, the primary materials of my practice are reclaimed wood\,  rusted metals\, and old house paint.   \nI prioritize natural processes of deterioration and decay\, often weaving in fragments  of the scorched and burned. In this regard\, my function is artist as well as principal  organizer. Climate\, the environment and time are my collaborators\, determining  textures\, tones\, and depth of colors.   \nWebsite \nInstagram \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sara Dismukes - Everywhere\, elsewhen.
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Sara Dismukes which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from February 12 – April 26\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, April 26 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nWe all move back and forth between public and private spaces. Rather than call attention to the origin or the destination\, I pay attention to what is found along the way. I am compelled by the social mediation of landscape\, and how desire and disregard are manifested in objects and spaces over time.  \nMy work celebrates the things we pass by\, often unnoticed\, while moving about our day. I am interested in entropy as well as the growth that is its companion. Close observation of the patterns and structures in nature\, as well as the rhythm of its seasonal cycles\, is an enthusiasm and an influence. I see tenacity and resilience within these systems and feel deeply connected to them. \nDomesticity is simultaneously welcoming and claustrophobic\, and the cultural labor traditionally performed in those spaces is a touchstone. Repetition and pattern are at the core of my process. \nIt is my job to honor the gap between intent and neglect. My personal metaphors and my artistic travels run parallel to the transitioning values of our larger society. My art challenges assumptions about culture and gender\, value and decline\, public and private\, nature and civilization. The continuum is here.  \nAbout the artist: \nAlthough Sara Dismukes has lived in several of the US time zones\, she has been a long-time resident of Alabama. She is on faculty within the Department of Art and Design at Troy University. Drawing—whether analog or digital—is the focus of her studio practice. \n

SUMMARY:Billie Hagerman\, Louise Fletcher and Alysha Schilling - Generations: Tripping on Light
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Billie Hagerman\, Louise Fletcher and Alysha Schilling which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nMother\, Daughter and Granddaughter showcasing light in their respective mediums \n  \nBillie Hagerman – Mother \n    I am one of four sisters who grew up on our dad’s cattle ranch in Idaho.  As we grew\, we each developed our own way of expressing our artistic passions. \n     It makes me extremely proud to see the artistic talents of my daughters and grandchildren and now\, even in my great grandchildren.  As for myself\, my husband and I have lived in Klamuth Falls\, Oregon for the past 52 years.  I have studied art at the Klamath Community College as well as under several well-established art instructors.  My art work is displayed in several businesses in Klamath Falls as well as at the Klamath Art Association Gallery in Klamath Falls\, and at the Two Rivers Art Gallery and Gift Shop in Chiloquin\, Oregon.  I am a member of both associations. \n  \nLouise Fletcher – Daughter \n     I am proud to be able to have a studio here in the Historic Lowe Mill\, Studio #2052. \n     My artistic take on Stone Jewelry can be attributed directly to my mother who nurtured my artist side.  I started making jewelry approximately 25 years ago\, starting with the basic stringing of beads and evolving into my current style of creating my own stone pieces with my lapidary equipment\, specializing in Intarsia and wire weaving.  This form of art has become my passion and my stress relief all in one.  You can find me most evenings in front of the tv with wire and stone in my hands.  Each piece I make is a unique piece that will never be repeated so each person can have a one of a kind\, wearable piece of art.  I have been able to attend the William Holland Lapidary Institute in Georgia to learn my latest skills and look forward to going back to fine tune my skills.   \n     Up until I was able to move into my current studio\, I participated in different shows and the Foley Farmers Market for 12 years on the Gulf Coast.  My husband and I moved to Arab 5 years ago and haven’t looked back! \n  \nAlysha Schilling – Granddaughter \n     Originally from Oregon\, I am a photographer driven by my lifelong passion for art.  As a mother of two and a dedicated wife living in North Carolina\, my artistic journey began at a young age\, sitting beside my grandmother as she painted and played the piano.     \n     Influenced by my grandmother’s dedication to nurturing my artistic talents\, I have pursued a fine art degree in film photography (AAS) from a local community college.  My time spent in the darkroom during my studies solidified my love for photography\, inspiring me to embark on a career that allows me to capture the raw beauty of people.  My style is that of a human documenter\, focusing on capturing people and babies with a natural look and employing a light touch in post-editing.  One of my most cherished experiences in photography is documenting newborns\, where I feel honored to capture the precious moments of a new life.     \n     Through my lens\, I strive to create timeless and heartfelt images that resonate with my audience. \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Doug Barrett - The Vanishing Point of Our Frontier
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Doug Barrett which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from October 2 – November 23 2024. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 23 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe title of this body of work is taken from Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life. He proposes that seeing the landscape (during modern modes of travel like a train ride) is like the rubbing together of two picture planes and we experience those images at the exact point of creation\, right before they vanish; de Certeau calls the train “a tireless shifter\,” always creating and destroying the landscape outside the window. In this body of work Barrett explores roadside imagery\, captured in that dreamlike moment; a glimpse caught in the rearview mirror of the mind; looking back at the moment of destruction.  \n  \nAbout the artist:  \nDoug Barrett received his MFA from the University of Florida and a BFA from the University of Central Florida. \n With over 20 years of professional graphic design experience\, his international clients included\, Mars\, Inc.\, VISA International and Banco Popular. His award winning work has been featured in many design publications. His work with UAB’s BLOOM Studio\, a student-run design studio that offers design thinking to under-served communities and non-profits was featured in the 2016 book\, Developing Citizen Designers. \n His research interests include designed fiction and designer as author methods. Fascinated with the practice of commuting\, the allure of the roadside and local visual culture–he is interested in exploring and representing found text and imagery in a way that talks about the constructed place. Signage\, billboards\, graffiti\, and ephemera point to the visual culture embedded in our surroundings. By examining the details of roadside culture he explores how meaning is constructed and conveyed through visual and cultural relationships. \n Barrett was recognized as one of the University of Florida’s\, Graduate Teachers of the year in 2006\, and codirected UF’s Tokyo Study Abroad program from 2008 – 2010. In 2012 he was awarded a prestigious Alabama State Arts Fellowship in Design\, and was the recipient of a Sappi – Ideas That Matter grant. In 2016 he was awarded the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 2022 Barrett was a recipient of the AIGA 50 covers award. \n  \nWebsite:  dougbarrett.com \nInstagram: @doug.barrett \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.) \n

Marked by bold colors\, movement\, and loose strokes\, his paintings are sure to do just that. \nBuilt upon years of formal training\, Austin’s personal style emerged when he picked up a palette knife and discovered a new artistic freedom that captured more emotion and energy than he ever experienced while painting with a brush. You’ll often find Austin painting to the sound of jazz legends like John Coltrane\, creating pieces that capture the essence of jazz. “When I’m painting\, it’s as if time doesn’t exist\,” he said. Unwinding as he creates\, Austin’s personality and his style are both relaxed. Yet\, he uses quick strokes and scratching techniques that convey a certain energy that comes off the canvas. “I’m very easy going—maybe a little too much\,” Austin said. “I think some of the emotions I hold back come out in my paintings.” \nAustin’s work has been showcased worldwide from Italy to Ireland\, and he is well respected in his home community of Birmingham\, Alabama where his pieces hang in galleries all over town. When he isn’t creating exquisite\, award-winning pieces of his own\, Austin stays busy teaching others to do the same. By day\, he teaches elementary school students techniques to express themselves artistically\, and he also teaches numerous classes live and online through his Palette Knife Academy which have been enjoyed nationally and internationally. A patient and encouraging teacher\, Austin said his students inspire him with their creativity. Several of his students have developed their own style using the palette knife and have gone on to become professional artists as well. “There’s nothing more rewarding than that\,” Austin said. \nWhether he’s painting a series of his signature musicians or a landscape\, Austin’s work is a lot like jazz music—filled with a calming sort of energy that keeps people coming back to it. He plans to keep “painting jazz” and inspiring others to do the same for years to come. \nhttp://ahmadaustin.com \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)
