SUMMARY:Writing Workshop with Ken Waldman
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful kick off to the Gobble Gobble Hey! Zine and Small Press Fest! \nFOUR WRITING PROMPTS: THE BEGINNING OF FOUR NEW STORIES OR POEMS \nThe more you write\, the luckier you get—and each time you start a piece\, there’s an opportunity to get luckier than ever. The trick is getting started. Here\, you’ll not only begin four new pieces\, but will learn strategies to begin many more. Please join us in the North Star Classroom Studio 1047 where acclaimed writer and musician Ken Waldman will lead a 90-minute workshop designed for writers of any experience\, ability\, and age (though recommended for writers at least 16 years old).  He will be happy to answer questions attendees have about small-press/DIY publishing.  Participants will also receive one of Ken’s own chapbooks! Pre-registration is required. \n$30 per student \nStudents bring paper and pens\, or computer in order to compose/write. \n  \nAbout the instructor: \nIn addition to being a fiddler (with 12 CDs)\, Ken Waldman is a former college professor with an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has 17 full-length poetry collections\, a memoir (about his life as a touring artist)\, 3 children’s books\, a creative writing manual\, a short story collection\, and a novel. Over 400 of his stories\, poems\, and essays have appeared in such journals as Beloit Poetry Journal and Poets & Writers. www.kenwaldman.com(opens in new tab) \nFollowing the workshop\, Ken will do a show titled Now Entering Alaska Time\, where he combines fiddle tunes with Alaska-set stories and poems. \nA long-time touring artist\, Ken has played the widest range of venues\, from the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage to the Dodge Poetry Festival to the Woodford Folk Festival (Queensland\, Australia).  “Like a Ken Burns movie. . . . Always recommended.”  —Austin Chronicle    “Renegade Americana.” –Denver Post \nKen Waldman visits Lowe Mill A&E on tour with a new book published  in October 2026\, You\, Too\, Can Go Bankrupt: A Memoir About Money\, Making Art\, and Survival  (about his life as a touring artist: https://www.kenwaldman.com/you-too-can-go-bankrupt(opens in new tab)).   In addition to the Friday workshop and performance\, he will also be a participating vendor at the Gobble Gobble Hey! Zine and Small Press Fest on Saturday\, November 21 from 11am-7pm.
