SUMMARY:In the Gallery with Jim White
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the North Floor Gallery for an exciting event in conjunction with the outsider art exhibition “Anything Can Be Redeemed” by Jim White\, accompanied by an artist talk about the work\,  spoken word reading from his latest book and acoustic musical performance in the gallery space.  This will be a wonderful experience you won’t want to miss out on! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJim White’s a restless soul operating in a variety of artistic mediums. First discovered by David Byrne\, White’s quirky musical output spans a 30 year stretch\, garnering him critical darling status along the way. \nHis iconic duet with Aimee Mann on the song Static on the Radio appeared in the closing credits of the film El Camino\, while his Primus-esque romp Wordmule was featured in the pivotal Heisenger Episode of the  Breaking Bad TV series. \nWhite’s a published author as well. His debut novel\, Incidental Contact was described by Mojo Magazine as “unputdownable”. Skirmishes With the Lord\, his follow up publication\, is a collection of humorous essays detailing the making of the award winning BBC 4 documentary Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus\, which White starred in. \nHis visual art has been displayed both nationally and internationally\, including shows at The Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin Ireland\, Aarhus Festuge in Aarhus Denmark\, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art\, in Winston-Salem and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. \nHis visual art output primarily centers around found object three dimensional assemblage constructions\, constituent parts culled from dumpsters\, flea markets and thrift stores around the US South. \nWhite’s themes\, be they in song\, written form or visual art\, primarily focus on the contradictions presented by life in the US South\, focusing in particular on southern religion and cultural institutions. \nWhite is the father of two grown daughters\, the eldest being rising country music star Willow Avalon.

SUMMARY:Jim White - Anything Can Be Redeemed
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Jim White which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nSome years back I shipped a show of my assemblage makings over to Dublin\, Ireland to appear in this high dollar art gallery on the grounds of Trinity College. \nOn the customs form the powers that be asked for a detailed breakdown of what I was shipping\, so I just wrote ‘garbage’. \nSee\, when I was a kid I got yelled at a lot for digging through other people’s garbage piles. Some said it was unsanitary\, others undignified. I didn’t much care what they thought\, as certain items in said garbage piles spoke to me\, asking to be liberated from their ignominious fate. \nOf course\, they got a pejorative term for people who dig in garbage piles\, dragging home mountains of worthless\, discarded objects-they call those folks ‘hoarders’. There’s popular intervention shows on TV that follow the sad lifestyles of such individuals. I watched a few episodes and winced from time to time. \nDespite certain superficial similarities\, I surmised that I’m definitely not a hoarder. Why? Because it’s not hoarding if you put what you find to use-which I do. Approaching it that way\, you’re not some sick-o digging in filthy garbage piles\, you’re just a low income artist out there collecting free art supplies.  \nAnd after three or four decades of gathering up quite the mountain of such free art supplies\, I find myself in possession of a truly magnificent stash of unwanted American esoterica. And from time to time when I do dare venture into certain wildly overcrowded rooms here in this old farm house where I live\, said items of esoterica\, they start calling out\, like sirens luring me nearer the rocks of creativity.   \nNext thing I know I got a bottle of wood glue in one hand and a C-clamp in the other. Paint brushes are brandished willy-nilly as visual connections are hastily forged. It’s a form of low brow magic.   \nI never set out with any vision or plan-I’m not the slightest bit conceptually minded. There is no deep message intended by this work\, with the exception of the notion that given the right circumstances\, anything\, living or not\, can be redeemed. \nSo far as I can tell\, I was put here on this earth to manifest those circumstances.  And so I do. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nThere’s no conventional marketplace category that even remotely describes what I do\, unless consummate outsider could be considered a commercial genre.  \nFor the last thirty years I’ve split my time and creative vision between working as a musician (eight studio albums\, five side projects)\, a visual artist (exhibitions both nationally and internationally) and a writer (2 books\, 1 Pushcart Prize for short fiction). \nAt the unlikely age of thirty eight I was “discovered”\, then championed by David Byrne\, of Talking Heads fame. Prior to that I worked in obscurity\, so it was a big paradigm shift. \nSongs of mine have been featured in film and TV\, including prime slots in the Breaking Bad franchise. My debut novel Incidental Contact was described by Mojo Magazine as “unputdownable”.  \nI live a fairly reclusive life out in rural Georgia\, and am father to two amazing daughters\, one of which is rising country music star Willow Avalon. \n  \nhttps://jimwhitemusic.net/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/jimwhiteofficial \n	Notice to Visitors\nArt is vastly different and can be edgy in both form and content. SUMMARY:Kristin Hudson - Everyday Rainbows
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristin Hudson which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nInspired by the sun shining through rainbow window film\, the idea for “Everyday Rainbows” began when I captured pictures of sun painted rainbows across my bathroom sink vanity and evolved into an exploration of color.  \nWhile studying for my art degree\, I discovered my love of color went deeper than the clothes I wore or how I decorated. I began utilizing color to tell a story\, emphasize a design\, or create an emotion. Combining those colors with simple shapes allowed me to think minimally while making a big impact. As I was naturally drawn to bright\, neon\, and iridescent colors\, it steadily became a focus in my art to incorporate eye catching color. \nEvery piece of art you see here is created from just 3 colors: pink\, yellow\, and blue. By limiting myself\, I explored\, experimented\, and showed the versatility of color. It is satisfying to see the way combinations\, layers\, and techniques\, can elicit vastly different reactions. I tried new\, experimental styles of creation with media outside my norm to further explore the opportunities these 3 colors could provide. \nAs you peruse the gallery\, you will see the breadth of opportunity within these 3 colors. Though each start from the same place\, the results can be vastly different.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nKristin is a Creative Marketing Manager\, Graphic Designer\, and Printmaker. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville and a B.A. in Studio Art/Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a Graphic Designer and Marketer\, she gets to create corporate design including brand development\, campaigns\, documents\, software design\, and more. In her personal art\, she focuses on illustration and branding. As a Printmaker\, she primarily works in linoleum\, woodblock\, and screen printing. Kristin has studio 2054 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment where she is lucky enough to be able to work remotely\, create during off hours\, experiment with all kinds of different art styles/mediums\, and enjoy a community of artists full of encouragement and motivation. \n  \n@kdesignartstudio \nwww.kdesignartstudio.com  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee - Back in Your Own Backyard
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nFrom Birmingham’s historic Industrial Highschool and Huntsville’s famed Alabama A&M to the far reaches of outer space\, “Back in Your Own Backyard” celebrates the music educators\, students and musicians of a rich and influential jazz legacy. An interplanetary melody of original works by Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee\, the exhibition revolves around the resplendent Sun Ra\, avant-garde performer\, composer\, bandleader and poet. Dare to knock on the door of the cosmos. \n  \nFrom Leanna Leithauser Lesley: \nThough I didn’t know it at the time\, 2006 brought an opportunity that changed the trajectory  of my career as an artist in ways I couldn’t have imagined. After being offered an exhibition at  the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and concerned about the suggested “Jazz” subject  matter\, a meeting with Dr. Frank Adams\, Director of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, was  scheduled for me. Following our initial meeting\, Dr. Adams (Doc) proposed that we meet  every week for the entirety of the time I was creating the exhibition. I spent many Tuesday  mornings in Doc’s small office at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, listening to music\, talking  Jazz\, and taking notes. I had been tasked with telling the American Jazz story within the  framework of twenty needlepointed portraits and Doc was helping me reconcile where all the  pieces fit together. Often his broader teachings about Jazz would go off-script as he would  excitedly slide a relatable Birmingham musician into the greater Jazz music story. Doc had  played in Fess Whatley’s Orchestra\, also in Sun Ra’s Sonny Blount Orchestra and for a period  of time\, both simultaneously. He talked about his days as a student at Industrial High School\,  his time playing with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in New York and his reasons for coming back  to Birmingham. I couldn’t wrap my head around the gift I was being given at the time. I  enjoyed our Tuesday mornings together immensly.  \nThe story that made my heart beat the fastest was the one he told about Duke Ellington\,  Count Basie\, Billie Holiday\, and others taking the Southern Railway\, “Birmingham Special”\,  from New York to New Orleans playing gigs along the way. Upon arrival in Birmingham\,  meetings with Fess Whatley would occur to reveal which students from Industrial High School  might be recommended to perform on the southern most part of the tour with the  orchestras. Fess would have several offerings each time. At the end of the tour the students  would be delivered back to Fess in Birmingham as these great band leaders made their way  back to New York. The future employment of these students was certainly guaranteed. In its  Jazz heyday 20th Century big bands\, orchestras and swing bands were filled with Industrial  High School students turned professional musicians. My hope is\, Doc’s enthusiasm and joy for  his beloved Industrial High School\, this city and the music played here sings throughout this  exhibition.  \nTo my dear mentor I say thank you deeply. On day one\, as I shared concerns about my ability  and my right to tell this Jazz story properly\, you expressly advised that we all have a great  responsibility to keep these stories alive. I hear your voice in mine. In your honor and memory I carry on with my lifelong Jazz education as I create new pieces to add to “our” original  exhibition in 2007.  \nAcknowledgements  \nBirmingham Public Library Archives\, Burgin Mathews\, Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of  Central Alabama. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeanna Leithauser Lesley is an avid needlepointer motivated by the power of jazz music\, the perseverance of the civil rights movement and an intention to elevate the perception of needlepoint as an art form through the complexity of stitching portraits.  \nAs a fiber artist\, she is immersed in the idea of weaving together the quiet methodical ways of needlepointing with the often unrestrained methods of jazz music and civil rights. In capturing the drama and emotion of the figure she chooses to stitch\, the finished artwork becomes a distinct freehand homage to the subject of her needlepoint as well as the photographer who took the image. Rejecting the shortcuts of technology\, she relies solely on her training as a visual artist to paint the canvas with yarn using a needle as her brush.  \nLeithauser Lesley has exhibited her distinct portraits in museums\, galleries and cultural art centers throughout the United States. She continues to increase the visibility of resolute individuals who have challenged the world we live in with her unique needlepoints while displaying gratitude for those who came before her. \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \nFrom Tara Stallworth Lee: \nWith immeasurable gratitude to:  \nLeanna Lesley\, for inviting me on this cosmic journey!  \nDr. Frank Adams\, for sharing your love of jazz with so many.  \nSUN RA\, for expanding my universe and showing me a world of magic and possibility. You are an angel.  \n– TSL \n  \n“IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO THAT IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO.” – SUN RA \n  \nAbout the artist: \nTara Stallworth Lee works across mediums with a concentration in analog photography\, papermaking\, collage\, and textiles. Expansion of human dignity is a central theme throughout all of her work which often serves as a catalyst for reflection and inspired action. In 1992\, Tara received her BS in Psychology with a minor in Art from Birmingham-Southern College. She is the 2021/22 recipient of the Alabama State Council on the Arts Gay Burke Fellowship in Photographic Art and a studio resident at Ground Floor Contemporary. In 2023 she became the inaugural artist in residence at Studio By The Tracks\, a studio and gallery for adult artists with autism. For over two decades\, Tara has been teaching for individuals and institutions\, including The Smithsonian Associates and the Alabama Prison Arts and Education Project. Tara lives and works in Birmingham\, Alabama. \n  \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook

SUMMARY:Sean Star Wars - Carve Forever!
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Sean Star Wars which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \nArtist statement: \nI choose the format of the large scale color woodcut because it best suits my energy charged\, caffeine induced\, aggressive approach to image making.  Charles Bukowski\, Ms Pacman\, Phillip Guston and Neil Blender are among my influences. Somewhere along the way\, I realized that I could accomplish my goals as an artist without enslaving myself to the meticulous obsessions of “traditional” printmaking. I don’t slow down to make perfect drawings or to finesse my color registration. I hammer out the carvings and blast out the prints\, and move on to the next print\, the next day. My primary concern is to create a strong visual infused with a sense of satirical humor\, in other words I like to tell funny stories using funny pictures. \nArtist bio: \nSean Star Wars lives in Laurel\, MS with his wife and five children.  Sean earned his MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. SUMMARY:Mary Beth Johns - The Big Picture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Mary Beth Johns which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from October 2 – November 23\, 2024. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 23 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nMy work is usually very large scale. I use my own photographs of the sitter from which to work to create these large-scale representations. I dramatize the sitter’s environment by painting with  electric colors such as a bright red\, blue or neon green. The big pictures I have created present the subject in their everyday life to achieve the most honest presentation. The amount of space  the sitter takes up in the frame depends on the canvas size I have selected\, but I mostly try to create a life size image. One very large and very honest representation is Checking in at 49  which displays the scar on my abdomen and the shape of my body at this stage of life. The nature of intimacy between people in an honest representation is one of my goals as well\, such as in Adoration; an image of my mother and my niece whom she helped rear. Some works focus  on clothes\, shoes and gestures to present the sitter’s personality which makes for non traditional portraits. I even hesitate to use the term portrait. I recall Alice Neel’s thoughts about  her paintings saying\, “I paint people\, not portraits”. The large scale I use also negates the  qualities of traditional portraiture. The people I paint are mostly family and friends. Many of  these big pictures are of other artists here at Lowe Mill A&E. By painting them I have joined a long  tradition of artists painting other artists. I try to include the subject’s hands and/or feet because  outside of the face – these are the most expressive parts of the body that we can see unclothed. Though I do not paint hands in any kind of detailed way – I do include them when I believe they  say something about the sitter’s personality. I often use patterns or very large brush strokes to  accentuate the texture of the paint or to demarcate one space from another. I tend to think  about the subject as a series of colorful shapes that are mostly flattened on the picture plane. I  use limited modeling and shading to this end. I work very fast through dry-brush and owe that  ability to the acrylics I use instead of oils. I subscribe to the ideals of Expressionism over  Realism. It’s the sincerity in art making that I identify with in this genre and as Barrett says\, I  engage with the idea that works of art should enliven the thoughts and emotions of the viewer.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nDr. Mary Beth “Bee” Johns has been the Associate Professor of Art Education for Athens State University in Athens Alabama for 12 years – working through the Alabama Center for the Arts in partnership with Calhoun Community College in Decatur Alabama. Dr. Johns received her Master in Art Education from The University of Alabama\, Tuscaloosa and her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. However\, it was at the University of North Alabama that she learned to paint with acrylics on a large scale when working towards a Bachelor degree. Presently\, Dr. Johns leads the Athens State art teacher education candidates through the Alabama State art certification program and teaches the cap stone classes at ASU associated with this degree. In addition to this she teaches a critique class where new artists learn about aesthetic philosophy and its implementation in studio practice\, Prior to accepting her position at ASU Dr. Johns was the museum educator for The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art\, Wilmington; now known as The Delaware Contemporary- an art space that infuses contemporary art and creativity into the community through exhibitions and educational experiences. Currently\, working out of the Alabama Center for the Arts\, Lowe Mill A&E studio 310\, she has had the opportunity to engage the community again by allowing the public to view a practicing artist at work. \n  \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)

SUMMARY:J. R. from Waverly - Future Primitive
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by J. R. from Waverly which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from July 31 – September 28\, 2024. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 28 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nFrom the artist: \nWith a deep love for life and art\, I find inspiration in various passions and interests that bring joy and fulfillment. From skateboarding to world travel\, playing music to connecting with nature\, each experience shapes my unique perspective on the world. Through my art\, I aim to share kindness and love with others\, creating a space for connection and reflection. Most of the time I paint with no destination in mind. I just simply let the colors take me wherever they want to go. After a while\, the piece will slowly start to reveal itself and more ideas will follow. The past is the past and the future is yet to be determined\, so I find great joy in just being in the now. Chasing colors on canvas. \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)
