SUMMARY:Stacy Tabb - You Are What You Eat
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Stacy Tabb which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from June 3 – August 29\, 2026.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, August 29 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe “You Are What You Eat Series” is comprised of multiple species of creatures\, each depicted containing their primary food source in place of their scales\, feathers\, shells\, and fur. They were drawn using pencil on paper then transferred to carving blocks via carbon paper. Each was carved and detailed using sharp woodcarving gouges\, then inked and printed on fine\, archival watercolor paper using professional oil-based relief ink. Select prints were then highlighted using watercolor paints. \nThe series is very much inspired by Scandinavian and Pacific Northwest styles of folk art\, where all negative space is filled\, and perspective is very subjective. Geometric shapes take the place of shadows and highlights\, and key elements\, such as the lightning bolts and mayflies\, and are echoed throughout the series. Later pieces contain elements that pay homage to the indigenous cultures that share space with the animals’ native habitats. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nI was born in Huntsville\, AL\, and began drawing and painting from a very early age. My formative years were spent in the cities and deserts of Saudi Arabia\, as I traveled with my family. We explored the art\, landscapes\, and wildlife of over two dozen countries in a series of journeys over multiple\, very influential years. Greece and Egypt were my particular favorites\, and have definite influence in my artwork. \nIn my university education\, I studied graphic design\, drawing\, and printmaking. My artistic training and professional career have explored every medium\, from digital design to technical drawing to website design\, and now back to printmaking. \nIn 2001\, my husband Daniel and I packed our two small children off to Florida\, then spent the next 20 years observing and photographing the diverse wildlife and landscapes. My drawing style is typically very realistic\, so I sought to push that limitation by delving into various artistic styles\, such as the very stylized world of folk art. I always start from a standpoint of realism in my drawings\, then work backwards towards the stylized: the pelican *must* be recognizable as a pelican\, after all. \nIn returning again into printmaking\, I’ve learned to have a clear path\, and know what I want to accomplish from the outset; one cannot just add a shadow with a slightly darker blend of pigment\, or lighten up an area with a bit more titanium white. In printmaking\, everything must be planned from the start\, whether it is positive – in the case a shape or pattern that gets inked – or negative – in the case of a space that is carved out and will not take ink. These work together to form highlights\, the lowlights\, and the entirety of the piece\, and there’s no turning back once carving has started\, so the plan must be solid. \nBack home now in North Alabama\, with the kids all grown up\, we live on an ex-hay farm we’re converting into a fruit and nut orchard\, and making as much art as possible. \n  \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, August 29 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nFrom the artist: \nI am interested in what happens after strength. \nMy work begins at the moment when control slips\, when endurance becomes weight and when myth cracks under the pressure of time\, responsibility and consequence. I paint figures we are taught to trust leaders’ legends and constructed symbols of certainty. I render them not as monuments but as bodies under strain carrying historical expectation and the cost of survival in their posture and surface. \nDripping and running paint is not an aesthetic choice alone\, it is a refusal of containment. Gravity asserts itself across the canvas reminding us that no figure however revered remains untouched by consequence. The paint moves the way memory moves slowly\, unavoidably staining what it passes through. \nRecurring symbols appear throughout my work hands in various stages of holding and releasing the Tin Man in states of becoming historical figures weathered by invisible labor. These are not illustrations of power but examinations of its burden. I am drawn to the space between armor and vulnerability where protection becomes isolation and strength demands silence. \nPlace and absence matter in my practice. Figures rooted in folklore and regional memory exist alongside globally recognized icons not to elevate one above another but to question whose sacrifices are remembered whose stories harden into myth and whose are allowed to fall quietly out of view. History is not neutral\, it chooses what to preserve. \nI do not seek resolution. My paintings live in tension between holding on and letting go between construction and collapse. I want the viewer to feel the weight of that pause. The moment when release is both terrifying and necessary. \nThis work is not about reverence. It is about recognition. \nWe are all carrying something. The question is not whether we endure but what endurance leaves behind.

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, August 29 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nTemple of Story is an ongoing narrative installation series by visual artist/ writer Neil Kendricks and composer/ sound artist Mike Mare. The artists’ longtime friendship and collaboration thrives on the interplay of images and sounds to approach storytelling as a quiet inheritance – shaped by memory\, imagination and what passes between them. Gradually\, meanings of specific pieces emerge as the gallery is transformed into a space for reflection. In these new works Temple of Story: Witness\, stories are deliberately left ambiguous and unresolved. As these haunting stories\, mysterious images and lush soundscapes are sent out into the world\, the stories are carried\, remembered and reshaped over time. \n  \nAbout the artists: \nMike Mare and Neil Kendricks are multidisciplinary artists whose collaborative work exists at the intersection of sound\, image\, and narrative. Together\, they create immersive environments where experience is not fixed\, but felt—emerging through tone\, texture\, and presence.  \nNeil Kendricks is an artist\, filmmaker\, writer\, photographer\, and educator whose work moves fluidly between film and mixed-media practices. He holds a Master’s degree in Television\, Film and New Media from San Diego State University. His films—including Loop\, Memory Lines\, Suspension\, and the award-winning Book of Skin—have screened at international festivals. His visual work reflects on identity and the lasting imprint of systemic structures\, as seen in his residency at Art Produce and subsequent exhibitions. Across mediums\, Kendricks builds worlds that feel both intimate and unresolved\, where meaning gathers slowly.  \nMike Mare is a composer and sound artist working with texture as a primary language—layering electronics\, ambient guitar\, and tonal drift into immersive sonic environments. His work spans film\, installation\, and performance\, with credits including Betrayal at Attica (HBO)\, the award-winning New York Seen From Above (The New Yorker Documentary Series)\, and Book of Skin\, for which he composed the score and sound design—extending his practice of creating sound that inhabits image rather than accompanies it. He is best known as a member and co-producer of the influential hip-hop group Dälek\, the UK-based band Holy Scum\, and his varied solo and collaborative projects\, moving between disciplines with a sensitivity to space\, weight\, and resonance. His compositions often hover between the cinematic and the abstract\, shaping emotional undercurrents rather than directing them.  \nTogether\, Mare and Kendricks approach storytelling as a quiet inheritance—something carried\, altered\, and passed between forms. Their collaborative work resists linear resolution\, inviting a slower encounter where sound and image intertwine\, and meaning is discovered through attention\, reflection\, and time.

Centering materials around the idea of DIY home repair: scrappy\, pragmatic\, and temporary. Examining the tension between care and compromise  reveals how makeshift repairs and momentary solutions mirror the dynamics of our closest  relationships.  \nImperfect\, temporary\, and continually evolving\, the work functions as an emotional  structure that positions viewers as onlookers catching glimpses of private conversations and interactions. This echoes the splendor and discomfort of intimacy\, and the quiet  persistence of trying to make things work. \nMy work investigates the dynamics of personal relationships through the framework of  spatial relations\, exploring how physical positioning can act as a stand-in for emotional  structure. I create interdependent networks whereby units rely on one another to function  as a means of support for isolated moments within the work. The work is a never-ending  experiment\, harnessing industrial and organic materials to find new and unlikely  combinations that coexist while enduring difficult relations.  \nBy crafting my own tools and equipment\, and jerry-rig problems rather than fix them\, I  create objects that reflect the expediency of do-it-yourself\, lower-middle-class home  projects. The soiled structures form quick-fix foundations\, stubbornly clinging to kindred  objects as a coping mechanism. By choosing to work with soda cans\, duct tape\, and other  materials\, I fabricate double meanings and imbed poorly made jokes within the larger  sculptural systems. These jokes always fall short of a punchline\, leaving them confused  and alone. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAlyssa Grey works intuitively to create interdependent networks whereby units rely upon  each other in order to function as a means of support for isolated moments in the work.  She creates a conversation between the work and the spaces in which they are residing.   \nFueled by the never-ending question\, “what if?” Grey experiments with industrial and  organic materials to find new and unlikely combinations of both. These personally inflected  and playful objects draw from the “do-it-yourself” expediency of lower-middle-class home  projects which often entails crafting her own tools and equipment to create a “quick-fix.”   \nAlyssa Grey attended University of Louisiana at Lafayette and received her Bachelors of  Fine Arts in Sculpture in 2020. She then went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Sculpture  at Boston University in 2024. Grey currently lives and works in Huntsville\, AL where she is  an Art Instructor at Alabama A&M University. \n  \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, August 29 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nCaroline Wang is a watercolor artist who paints from inspiration\, believing that anything in life can become a subject. With a strong foundation in drawing\, she approaches each painting with freedom—designing and creating whatever captures her imagination. Every painting she creates carries a story\, and through her art books\, she gives those stories a voice. She believes artists should tell the original stories behind their work\, rather than leaving them to be interpreted long after they are gone. \nSince 2003\, Caroline Wang has exhibited her work throughout the Southeastern United States\, including many major cities and her home base in Huntsville. She has held over 70 solo exhibitions. After retiring from NASA in 2016\, she established her studio at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment Center. Having a permanent space to share her work with the public has allowed her to slow down her outside exhibitions and focus more deeply on creating\, reflecting\, and telling the stories behind her art. \nCaroline often shares that she has published seven art books\, each representing a different chapter of her artistic journey: Space Exploration Stories by Caroline’s Watercolor Strokes\, From Artist’s Eyes\, Wildlife in Color—Animal Expressions\, Less is More\, Landscape by Caroline Wang\, and City Memories: Caroline’s Watercolor Stories. Together\, these works reflect her dedication to preserving life through art and storytelling. People’s Expressions in Caroline’s Art is her seventh book and is currently under review by the publisher. \nFrom an early age\, Caroline was inspired by visits to museums and galleries\, where she listened to others interpret the meanings behind paintings. Those moments stayed with her. Over time\, she realized something important—she wanted to tell her own stories. Rather than leaving her artwork open to distant interpretation\, she chose to preserve the memories\, emotions\, and intentions behind each piece. This realization led her to publish her art books\, giving her paintings both a visual and a written voice. \nBeyond painting\, Caroline embraces many passions. She finds joy in music\, playing the violin and piano\, and singing for herself. She also enjoys sports\, including tennis and swimming. Swimming\, in particular\, has become an important part of her life\, helping her maintain her health and balance. These experiences quietly shape her perspective and become part of the stories she tells through her art. \nThrough her books\, Caroline hopes to give her paintings a lasting voice. Writers tell stories through words\, while artists tell stories through color\, feeling\, and imagination. SUMMARY:Theatre of Fashion Kids and Youth Sewing Classes
DESCRIPTION:Cost is $155 for 4 classes. Classes are 2 hours each.\n \nThe Theatre of Fashion is a school of fashion designing and sewing for children ages 9-17 and adults.\nHere students learn the elements of design\, fashion illustration\,  sewing and fashion presentation (modeling the designed garments). Classes culminate with a presentation of student’s designs (by students) on a runway! \n\n\nCost is $155 for 4 classes. One time registration fee is $15.\n\nInstructor: Anya Sievers is a founder of The Theatre Of Fashion and a small fashion business Anyaberry.  She is excited to continually improve the program offered at The Theatre Of Fashion.

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 21 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nHeads or Tales: I am a lucky old hag who gets to play and explore with things I love. Heads- instead of printmaking variations this series takes one basic cardboard form base to make Creature from the Black Lagoon inspired masks. Tales- I really love a good story or tale. Books\, movies\, even one old saying and a silly meme found their way into a relief print for this work. I decide to show side by side a print and then a print with lots of bells and whistles… mostly glue and paint. Sometimes I like the print and sometimes the variation. A linoleum print that hopefully captures a favorite moment from stories that have stuck with me. \nAbout the artist: \nEarly on\, I was assigned a mentor with the pilot program for the Gifted and talented for Art. It was wonderful. Over the years I’ve taken classes and workshops in many areas of art\, and decided printmaking was my favorite. Joined a printmaking collective at Lowe Mill A&E – and that was a big turning point for me\, leading to a studio on the 3rd floor. I love the discipline and structure of Printmaking. Taking an image and varying it satisfies the artist in me.  Lowe Mill A&E and fellow tenants have been an instrumental influence helping me grow and continue to learn . \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 21 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nFrom the artist: \nWhen you travel\, why do you think some places are so remarkable and  memorable that you remember them for the rest of your life and want to  come back? Is it the special colors of the sky or flowers? Maybe it’s the  architecture? Or memories?  \nOr maybe it is the history and stories of these places that make it so  special? Without them this place would be just trees\, landscapes and old  buildings.  \nI have places like that in my heart\, which are much more than landscapes. I am sure you have them too.  \nIt’s challenging for me as an artist to show how remarkable these landscapes are.  \nI came up with an idea to include in some paintings part of the history of these places.  \nThese are collages on wooden boards\, and I mounted watercolor paintings on them  \nThe Jerusalem collection has newspapers in different languages representing people living in Jerusalem.  \nSantorini has ancient murals found in the city of Akrotiri from around  3600 BC. When the city was destroyed by volcanic eruption in 1600 BC  the frescoes were perfectly preserved. I used some elements of ancient  art for my collages. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nArtist Tatyana Igumnova Hankinson was born in the former Soviet Union. Tatyana studied seven years and graduated from the Art School in Tashkent\, Uzbekistan majoring in “Drawing and Fine Art”.  She worked as a poster artist and had personal exhibits in the SovietUnion. \nTatyana moved to United States in 2002. With a few exhibitions behind her she became a full-time artist and art tutor. Living in Tampa\, Florida she was the President of Tampa Regional Artists in 2011\, 2012\, and received a grant by the Hillsborough Arts Council to paint 20 paintings of notable Tampa Area sights. \nTatyana moved to Huntsville\, AL in 2012. In 2013 she was awarded “Best of Show” at Panoply Arts Market as a mixed media artist for her “Jerusalem” collection.  Tatyana had two exhibits at Lowe Mill\, (“Jerusalem” watercolor\, “Ghost of Everglades” oil)\, at Nativity Church\, at the Main public library\, and at the First Baptist Church.  Currently Tatyana teaches art classes for children and adults. (It happens more often than I’d like to admit.) \nEvery piece in this exhibition caught my eye\, made me smile\, started a conversation\, or simply refused to stay behind. Together\, they’ve transformed my home into a gallery filled with stories\, memories\, and the incredible talent of Lowe Mill’s artists. \nThis exhibition isn’t about building a perfect collection—it’s about the joy of discovering art\, meeting the people who create it\, and supporting a community that makes creativity part of everyday life. \nSo take a look around. I was a member of Virago\, an all-female art collective; owned NoneSuch Gifts\, which had a space here for many years; and owned and operated Happy Tummy Restaurant at Lowe Mill A&E for 15 years. \nToday\, I continue that connection as a part-time Event Coordinator for Lowe Mill A&E. \nFor more than two decades\, Lowe Mill A&E has been a significant part of my life. I have shared this place with countless artists and have formed friendships with people who have created\, exhibited\, performed\, and built their lives within these walls. \nThis collection is a reflection of those years—the artists I have known\, the friendships I have made\, and the experiences we have shared. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Andrew Kozlowski which will be on view in the First Floor Main Gallery from September 2 – November 21\, 2026.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 21 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe exhibition SLO PWR collects a sample of the original drawings from my weekly comics- warts and all. Each week starts with a blank page- followed by blue pencil drawing- and finally black ink. Though the pages can be read independently- their power comes from their collection. Over time the drawings have gained stamped titles and dates\, allowing the reader to recognize the patterns that emerge when one settles into the simple practice of noticing what is going on around them. This is an exhibition about time- though the means are simple- the result comes from a sustained and ongoing accumulation of observations\, built one pebble at a time.  \nSLO PWR invites each viewer to become a reader- to spend some time with these pages\, one at a time\, bit by bit\, in order to as cartoonist Lynda Barry would say “notice what you notice”.  \nWhile the majority of the exhibition showcases the original drawings\, additional prints are available to show how the drawings are finished with digital color and printed as posters or as books. This portfolio represents a fraction of the pages available- additional drawings are available for consideration. The majority of the work would be framed in 20″x16″ white washed frames for ease of installation. I would also be interested and available for related workshops (either online or in person) including hands on comics making workshops and/or artist talks. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAndrew Kozlowski is a cartoonist\, printmaker\, writer\, small press publisher\, and art educator who has been living and working in Jacksonville Florida since 2017. Prior to 2020 his work consisted of prints on paper and large scale site specific installations using wheat pasted prints. However\, when the COVID-19 pandemic began he was unable to work in the studio and traveling for exhibitions was not feasible. Quarantined at home he dove deep into his practice of journaling and writing\, reigniting his first artistic impulse: comics. While he’s been a practicing artist for many years\, 2020 provided a monumental shift in his work. Writing and drawing comics has helped him say things that his artwork had otherwise buried or ignored\, and has offered him a chance to share a different part of his life. \n  \n  \n  \n

What I  experienced\, read\, researched\, and discovered during that period awakened a transformation that  may have been dormant within me for years. Disruption often reshapes the way artists see the world\, and during this time I experienced my own inner metamorphosis.   \nPerhaps by coincidence\, perhaps by intuition\, I found myself returning to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and\, at the same time\, encountering the ancient Medusa mosaic from Kibyra. Created nearly two  thousand years ago\, the mosaic presents Medusa through the intricate opus sectile technique.  Although there can be no direct connection between Ovid and the unknown artist who created this  image\, I felt as though the two works were speaking to one another across centuries. Ovid seemed  to give a voice to the silent sorrow I saw in Medusa’s eyes.   \nThat imagined dialogue between image and text became the foundation for this body of work. I  began creating my own interpretations of Medusa\, not simply as a figure from mythology\, but as a  symbol through which to explore transformation\, vulnerability\, strength\, and the experience of  womanhood.   \nFor me\, Medusa creates a bridge between past and present. Through these works\, I consider how  ancient stories continue to resonate in contemporary life and how the struggles\, perceptions\, and  transformations associated with being a woman can echo across thousands of years.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nGökden Alpman Matthews began her ceramic education at Anadolu University’s Faculty of Fine  Arts in 1989\, graduating in 1993 and earning her master’s degree in 1997. Her graduate research  focused on the history\, processing techniques\, and chemical composition of Egyptian clay and  tiles. As part of this work\, she conducted research at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the  Brooklyn Museum in New York and developed her own Egyptian clay formula\, which she used to  create and exhibit ceramic jewelry.  \nAfter completing her education\, Gökden worked in several ceramic factories in Turkey\, managing  product design and development while continuing her artistic research\, publishing articles\,  exhibiting her work\, and pursuing doctoral studies. In 2004\, she opened her first ceramic studio in  Istanbul\, producing ceramics for museum and gift shops and creating custom ceramic and mosaic  wall panels for hotels and private institutions.  \nSince 2009\, Gökden has worked from her studio at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment in Huntsville\,  Alabama. She is best known for her distinctive ceramic mosaic panels and sculptures\, particularly  her celebrated “Kaftans\,” which combine small\, colorful\, individually shaped ceramic elements in  a patchwork-like composition.  \nHer work is strongly influenced by the cultural and historical richness of her homeland and often  explores identity\, migration\, and cultural unity. Through ceramic mosaic and patchwork techniques\,  she brings diverse elements together into cohesive compositions\, reflecting her belief that different  cultures and identities can retain their individuality while forming a harmonious whole.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 21 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe earliest known female historians include Ban Zhao\, who lived in China in the 1st century AD\,  and Anna Komnene\, who wrote in the Byzantine Empire in the 12th century. Apart from them\, the histories of many famous women\, Helen of Troy\, Hürrem Sultan\, Elizabeth I\, and Catherine the Great  of Russia have largely been passed down to us through the writings of men.  \nWe know that the word history comes from the Greek historia\, meaning inquiry or investigation\, and  passed through Latin and French before entering English. Yet\, in my opinion\, the word itself has  been metaphorically monopolized by men.  \nHis story. :)))  \nHistory has so often been told from a man’s perspective. Perhaps that is why many historical events  seem to lack a woman’s voice and perspective. But even the history of women when recorded  predominantly by male historians can it truly have been conveyed in its entirety?  \nWhat about the women’s stories that never reached us because they were not considered  important or noteworthy enough to be recorded by male historians?  \nIn this exhibition\, you will encounter the stories of women whose names may not appear in history  books\, yet whose lives and presence have been preserved in mosaics\, tiles\, frescoes\, and  paintings. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nGökden Alpman Matthews began her ceramic education at Anadolu University’s Faculty of Fine  Arts in 1989\, graduating in 1993 and earning her master’s degree in 1997. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 21 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nThe Bubble People \nOngoing series \n2008–present \nMixed Media; Oil\, latex\, graphite\, alcohol marker\, vinyl\, ink\, wood\, pvc\, paper\, adhesive\, fabric\, leatherette\, high reflective film\, various film and laminate\, mirror film\, UV Ink\, magnet\, cardstock\, etc. \n  \nI’m inspired by the understanding that the audience creates their own interpretations of the work. \nThe name “Bubble People” comes from the idea that a soap bubble is the ideal shape for the task it’s performing\, and falls inline with the metaphor that we are both the ocean and the drop of water. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations told through a limited spread of variables. \nThese characters began with the goal of telling a story at a glance. A few lines become a character\, and a narrative unfolds. I became fascinated by the simplicity of these characters and how color can change everything about that story.  \nI continue to return to these simple characters\, and find something new each time I do.
