SUMMARY:Kathryn Williamson - Climate Women
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kathryn Williamson which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nI believe that healing the climate is connected with healing ourselves\, which includes listening to those small seeds of yearning we have\, to share ourselves and live out loud from our passions. I always loved astrophysics and art\, and the climate crisis asks me to bring both the scientific and artistic parts of myself forward to be more whole. I’ve spent much of the last decade as an academic\, an astronomy educator\, hardly painting at all. This “Climate Women” series is a gift to myself. It has accompanied a larger shift in my life of transitioning from academia to independent consulting\, from frantic rushing to being more intentional with my time\, and from following rigid perceptions of what a “professional” does to listening more to the messy\, creative parts of myself. Painting these women while listening to recordings of them speaking on stage or in interviews has become a meditation practice for me to listen\, learn\, create\, and connect. \nI originally started this series by painting authors from the book All We Can Save\, but since the book has about fifty authors\, I started to bounce around. In no particular order\, I just followed my whims for topics that caught my eye. I expanded to women I know personally and/or learned about through other efforts. I have many more portraits I’d like to paint\, and I made more paintings for this series than I’m sharing in public. This is for a few important reasons. The first has to do with consent. A big part of this effort is the practice of respect and reciprocity. I vowed from the beginning that I would only display the paintings if I received explicit permission. There are a handful of women I painted who I was not able to reach\, and it was not for lack of trying! For example\, I can see that a few of the women are extremely busy taking brave actions\, and after brief attempts to contact them\, I thought it might be best to just let them be so they can focus. Others seem to have totally disappeared from contact. It gives me a sinking feeling. I wonder\, why? Did their activism bring them into harm’s way? Are they okay? There is only one painting where I got an explicit “not at this time” response. There is also one painting that is just bad; I’m too embarrassed to share it with anyone. It was one of the first ones I started\, and I could feel myself rushing\, trying to “accomplish” the big task ahead. I keep it as a reminder to take my time and prioritize investing in process and quality. Then there are the paintings where I did invest careful attention to detail\, and I’m very proud of the resulting quality\, and I still couldn’t reach the woman depicted\, so I sit with that feeling of not getting what I thought I wanted\, without getting that external validation. And that\, too\, is a learning practice for me. \nThis collection is not at all representative of the many women who show up to help make a better world. In general\, compared to men\, women are more likely to recognize climate change as a serious problem\, more concerned global climate change will harm them personally\, and believe that people will have to make major lifestyle changes to reduce the effects of global climate change (Pew Research Global Attitudes Survey 2015). While women suffer disproportionately from resource scarcity and natural disasters resulting from climate change\, women also hold significant community and ecological knowledge\, can mobilize households\, and can safeguard health measures such as sanitation and forest regeneration. This is why gender equity is listed as one of the key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \nWhether you are inspired by the women featured in this collection\, other women helping their communities\, and/or all the awesome non-women activists out there helping to envision and generate a healthy\, equitable\, and sustainable future\, I hope you find your unique role in the climate movement. We need everyone. We need you! \nOriginal paintings are not for sale. See ursagaia.com if you would like to purchase a 18×24-inch mosaic poster print of the collection. Proceeds will be donated to the All We Can Save Project. \n

SUMMARY:Paul Cordes Wilm - Our Divided Circus
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Paul Cordes Wilm which will be on view in the First Floor Main Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. He currently lives in Birmingham.  \nEqually influenced by abstract expressionist Robert Rauschenberg and (Alabama folk artist) Mose Tolliver\, the bright house paint colors (a good-natured nod to the artist’s red/green colorblindness)\, bold ink lines\, satirical juxtapositions\, subtle social commentary and sharp sense of humor all make Paul Cordes Wilm’s “Folk-Pop” paintings on found wood instantly recognizable.  \nHis latest series\, Our Divided Circus attempts to paint a subconscious portrait of these strange\, chaotic and unpredictable times we’re experiencing.  \nThis exhibit was inspired by : \nautomatism\, bingo cards (Mexican)\, climate change\, dreams (half-remembered)\, early morning birdsong\, freeform radio\, geography\, Halloween\, intuition\, jigsaw puzzles\, kitchen conversations\, language\, Musique Concrete\, night\, the occult\, politics (current)\, questioning\, road trips\, spirits\, transformation\, uncertainty\, vernacular\, wood (patterns)\,   X (generation)\, the Year of the Snake\, zoo cages \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nathan Husser - Conditions for Progress
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Nathan Husser which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nConditions for Progress is a multimedia solo exhibition containing sculptures made from plaster\, glass\, cheesecloth\, wood and more. This exhibition is a body of work reflecting on the presence and importance of the physicality held in objects. These altered and re-contextualized forms represent the dense honesty three dimensions can have\, while simultaneously being multifaceted conceptually. Conditions for Progress is an inside look into how as an artist\, I know to process and reimagine life beyond the language I speak and represent it in sculpture. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nMy name is Nate Husser from Madison\, Alabama. I am a 2025 Graduate from the University of North Alabama where I majored in Sculpture. I have been practicing and creating in different mediums of art from photography\, filmmaking\, to collage the last 10 years of my life. Sculpture has taken over as my main form of creative expression and fascination. With my sculpture I am able to create\, replicate\, and alter different forms to change or elevate their meaning. This being said\, I consider myself a conceptual artist. I am always questioning and trying to derive new meaning from my surroundings.  \n

Their paintings\, photographs\, book arts and writing are expressions of the inspiration by Alabama’s wildest places that have deeply influenced their work and their lives. The aim of this exhibit and its associated workshops\, Forest Bathing walks\, and Wilderness hikes is to bring awareness of the importance of the treasure of Wilderness for all living things\, and to advance Wild Alabama’s mission to inspire people to enjoy\, value and protect the wild places of Alabama.  \n2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act that gave us all three federal Wilderness areas in Alabama. This exhibit is a celebration of the persistent efforts of Alabamians who fought for the Act\, and the wisdom of a Congress that gave it overwhelming bipartisan support. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kristin Hudson - Everyday Rainbows
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristin Hudson which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nInspired by the sun shining through rainbow window film\, the idea for “Everyday Rainbows” began when I captured pictures of sun painted rainbows across my bathroom sink vanity and evolved into an exploration of color.  \nWhile studying for my art degree\, I discovered my love of color went deeper than the clothes I wore or how I decorated. I began utilizing color to tell a story\, emphasize a design\, or create an emotion. Combining those colors with simple shapes allowed me to think minimally while making a big impact. As I was naturally drawn to bright\, neon\, and iridescent colors\, it steadily became a focus in my art to incorporate eye catching color. \nEvery piece of art you see here is created from just 3 colors: pink\, yellow\, and blue. By limiting myself\, I explored\, experimented\, and showed the versatility of color. It is satisfying to see the way combinations\, layers\, and techniques\, can elicit vastly different reactions. I tried new\, experimental styles of creation with media outside my norm to further explore the opportunities these 3 colors could provide. \nAs you peruse the gallery\, you will see the breadth of opportunity within these 3 colors. Though each start from the same place\, the results can be vastly different.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nKristin is a Creative Marketing Manager\, Graphic Designer\, and Printmaker. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville and a B.A. in Studio Art/Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a Graphic Designer and Marketer\, she gets to create corporate design including brand development\, campaigns\, documents\, software design\, and more. In her personal art\, she focuses on illustration and branding. As a Printmaker\, she primarily works in linoleum\, woodblock\, and screen printing. Kristin has studio 2054 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment where she is lucky enough to be able to work remotely\, create during off hours\, experiment with all kinds of different art styles/mediums\, and enjoy a community of artists full of encouragement and motivation. \n  \n@kdesignartstudio \nwww.kdesignartstudio.com  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Liz Onken - Tea in Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Liz Onken which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nTea in Istanbul is a visual diary—an abstracted love letter to a city that overwhelmed my senses and opened my eyes. This collection reflects on my time as a foreign painter immersed in the rich\, layered world of Istanbul: a place where ancient empires meet modern rhythms\, and where every street corner holds a burst of color\, scent\, or sound. \nThrough vibrant palettes\, textured surfaces\, and dynamic forms\, these works capture the chaos and cohesion of a city alive with history and daily ritual. From the deep reds of street-side spices to the pastel shimmer of tile mosaics\, from the tangled geometry of architecture to the soft intimacy of sharing tea\, each piece is a translation of sensory experience into visual language. \nThe paintings shift between representation and abstraction\, reflecting how I navigated this unfamiliar city—sometimes clearly\, sometimes intuitively. Wandering through Istanbul felt like moving through a living mosaic\, a patchwork of empires and cultures\, where cats nap beside centuries-old ruins and the scent of baklava drifts past contemporary storefronts. \nAt the heart of it all: tea. A moment of stillness and warmth amid the movement. This show is a meditation on discovery\, observation\, and the beauty of getting lost. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLiz Onken is an abstract expressionist painter based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Auburn University and continued her studies in Rome\, where she deepened her understanding of art history and traditional techniques. \nNamed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2018 by World Art Collector magazine\, Liz is known for her bold abstract paintings\, as well as her mixed media and textile-based works. Her art has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and abroad. \nAfter years of working and studying in other cities\, Liz is excited to return to her hometown\, where she continues to create and exhibit work inspired by both her Southern roots and international experiences. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Eclectic Frog Collective - The Odd\, The Weird\, The Queer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by The Eclectic Frog Collective which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit: \nThe Weird\, The Odd\, The Queer  \nOnce meant to wound\, these words have become a mirror. \nOdd. Weird. Queer. \nI’ve worn them all—and now I wear them with purpose. \nThis exhibit is a meditation on otherness. \nIt asks us to see with new eyes\, to question the boundaries of belonging\, and to find beauty in what defies convention. \nIt holds space for grief and becoming—for memory\, mystery\, and transformation. \nTo be odd is to walk a path all your own. \nTo be weird is to bend the pattern into something new. \nTo be queer is to live truthfully without waiting for permission. \nThe Weird\, The Odd\, The Queer is a tribute to those who came before: the rebels\, the romantics\, the survivors. It is a celebration of queer existence in all its complexity\, and a call to Resist\, Remember & Rise.  \n  \n About the Artists: \nThe Eclectic Frog Collective is a queer-led group of Southern artists who explore themes of transformation\, resistance\, and survival through mixed media\, sculpture\, photography\, installation\, and performance. \nLed by Aaron Kilgore—from Studio RR5A at Lowe Mill A&E\, the collective blends political urgency with honest personal stories. Their work invites you to see the beauty that grows on the margins. \n  \n

SUMMARY:CattyShack Lounge Reservations
DESCRIPTION:Cattyshack\, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of shelter cats in Alabama. We provide food and medical supplies to our foster homes\, as well as pay for all vet care. Click here to MAKE A TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TO SAVE MORE KITTENS! \nAll of our cats are in foster homes\, they DO NOT LIVE AT THE CAT LOUNGE. Only a handful of our available cats and kittens come into the Cattyshack Lounge each Thursday-Saturday. If there is a specific kitten you want to meet\, you can email us to see if they are on the roster\, but that does not guarantee they will be there because the health of cats and kittens can change at a moments notice and they may have to stay home. The only way to guarantee a meet and greet with a specific cat is to have an approved application and arrangements are then made directly with the foster home. \nThe Cattyshack Lounge\, located at Lowe Mill\, 2211 Seminole Drive\, Studio 1062\, Huntsville\, AL 35805\, is a resource for fundraising\, socializing\, and a way to increase cat adoptions. It is designed to allow humans of all ages to play or relax\, decompress or amp up\, and flat out enjoy cats and kittens that need a forever home. You do not need to be looking for a cat to adopt to come visit\, just come play! RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED\, and a $14 donation per person is requested to complete the reservation online\, so make one now by clicking here then come on in\,  find a comfy spot\, and wait for the magic to happen!! \nCat adoptions involve filling out a non-binding application. NO SAME DAY ADOPTIONS ARE DONE AT THE LOUNGE. Please plan to come back to the Lounge the following weekend to pick up your kitty. Please understand that we are all volunteers and it takes time to diligently process each application. To find out more about how the adoption process works\, check out the Our Kitties page!

SUMMARY:America the Beautiful: A History of Art in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Let’s look together at our nation’s artistic heritage. This class is an overview of the history of painting in the U.S. from settlement to about 1950. It will also include some architecture\, sculpture\, photography\, and poetry. \nWhich artists capture the history and/or the spirit of the U.S.? Are there paintings that illustrate our nation’s core values and ideals? We will explore the relationship between our culture\, our history\, and our art. A timeline will connect the art with key historical events and social movements. Students are encouraged to share their perspectives\, analyses\, and interpretations and to bring in additional examples. There will be opportunities for creative writing. By the end of the series of classes\, each participant will have received 32 color copies of famous works of art to take home. There is no expectation that students will have any prior knowledge of art history. \nArt historian Lynne Berry has taught classes about famous works of religious art at the Church of the Nativity and other venues since 1998. She is a frequent contributor to the WLRH Sundial Writers Corner with a series called Art on the Radio. \nPlease contact Lynne at lynneb4@gmail.com for instructions on how to register. Payments will be made by cash\, check\, Venmo\, or Zelle and must be received no later than June 13\, 2025. \nIf any classes must be cancelled by the teacher\, the student will be given a pro-rated refund for that class.
