SUMMARY:Denise DeKemper - Dye Hard\, Bloom Anyway
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Denise DeKemper which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nHope and love are stubborn things—like wildflowers in sidewalk cracks\,  they refuse to quit. My silk paintings embrace this beautiful defiance\, where  hearts stay open\, flowers bloom on their own terms\, and dye does  whatever it pleases. Working with silk and salvaged fibers\, I celebrate  imperfection\, resilience\, and the messy\, unpredictable magic of life. Love  and hope may not follow the rules\, but that’s exactly how they thrive. And  still\, we bloom.  \n  \nAbout the Artist  \nDenise DeKemper grew up in Fayette\, Alabama\, spending her childhood  immersed in books\, nature\, the quiet beauty of her grandparents’ farm— and\, of course\, football. After years out west\, she found her artistic voice in  fiber art\, specifically painting on silk. Now back home in Huntsville\, she  works from her studio at Lowe Mill A&E (Studio 2042)\, where she embraces the  South’s contradictions—its grit and grace\, its hardship and beauty. Guided by the spirit of Dye Hard\, Bloom Anyway\, her work reflects resilience\, transformation\, and the art of finding beauty in the imperfect. \nInstagram \n

SUMMARY:Leslie Wood - Whimsy & Wonder: A Journey Through Color
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Leslie Wood which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nMy work is a reflection of emotions\, moods\, and life moments—translated onto canvas and journal pages through bold\, saturated color and whimsical forms. This exhibit is an exploration of playful curiosity and deep feeling\, where abstraction and character-driven narratives coexist. \nIn my abstract pieces\, I explore the raw language of color\, resisting the urge to define form and instead allowing emotion to dictate movement. These works are an exercise in letting go\, trusting intuition\, and embracing the unexpected. \nThe monsters\, on the other hand\, are my way of personifying feelings—quirky\, imperfect beings that carry stories within them. Their origins in upcycled materials reflect my commitment to sustainability and my belief that even discarded things hold creative potential. \nTogether\, these works serve as a visual journal—each piece a marker of time\, energy\, and experience. They invite the viewer to lose themselves in color\, to see stories in the abstract\, and to embrace both the playful and profound within their own imagination. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeslie Wood is a mixed media artist from Lacey’s Spring\, Alabama. With a background in aerospace engineering\, she later pursued art\, studying photography\, sculpture\, and pain.ng at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Blending reality and fantasy\, her work often begins in art journals before moving to canvas. She is a regular featured artist in Stampington’s ART Journaling magazine and teaches art journaling workshops online and at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Leslie also serves as the Art Director of Expressions for the mental health nonprofit Little Orange Fish\, using the arts to foster storytelling and self-expression. \n  \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee - Back in Your Own Backyard
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nFrom Birmingham’s historic Industrial Highschool and Huntsville’s famed Alabama A&M to the far reaches of outer space\, “Back in Your Own Backyard” celebrates the music educators\, students and musicians of a rich and influential jazz legacy. An interplanetary melody of original works by Leanna Leithauser Lesley and Tara Stallworth Lee\, the exhibition revolves around the resplendent Sun Ra\, avant-garde performer\, composer\, bandleader and poet. Dare to knock on the door of the cosmos. \n  \nFrom Leanna Leithauser Lesley: \nThough I didn’t know it at the time\, 2006 brought an opportunity that changed the trajectory  of my career as an artist in ways I couldn’t have imagined. After being offered an exhibition at  the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and concerned about the suggested “Jazz” subject  matter\, a meeting with Dr. Frank Adams\, Director of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, was  scheduled for me. Following our initial meeting\, Dr. Adams (Doc) proposed that we meet  every week for the entirety of the time I was creating the exhibition. I spent many Tuesday  mornings in Doc’s small office at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, listening to music\, talking  Jazz\, and taking notes. I had been tasked with telling the American Jazz story within the  framework of twenty needlepointed portraits and Doc was helping me reconcile where all the  pieces fit together. Often his broader teachings about Jazz would go off-script as he would  excitedly slide a relatable Birmingham musician into the greater Jazz music story. Doc had  played in Fess Whatley’s Orchestra\, also in Sun Ra’s Sonny Blount Orchestra and for a period  of time\, both simultaneously. He talked about his days as a student at Industrial High School\,  his time playing with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in New York and his reasons for coming back  to Birmingham. I couldn’t wrap my head around the gift I was being given at the time. I  enjoyed our Tuesday mornings together immensly.  \nThe story that made my heart beat the fastest was the one he told about Duke Ellington\,  Count Basie\, Billie Holiday\, and others taking the Southern Railway\, “Birmingham Special”\,  from New York to New Orleans playing gigs along the way. Upon arrival in Birmingham\,  meetings with Fess Whatley would occur to reveal which students from Industrial High School  might be recommended to perform on the southern most part of the tour with the  orchestras. Fess would have several offerings each time. At the end of the tour the students  would be delivered back to Fess in Birmingham as these great band leaders made their way  back to New York. The future employment of these students was certainly guaranteed. In its  Jazz heyday 20th Century big bands\, orchestras and swing bands were filled with Industrial  High School students turned professional musicians. My hope is\, Doc’s enthusiasm and joy for  his beloved Industrial High School\, this city and the music played here sings throughout this  exhibition.  \nTo my dear mentor I say thank you deeply. On day one\, as I shared concerns about my ability  and my right to tell this Jazz story properly\, you expressly advised that we all have a great  responsibility to keep these stories alive. I hear your voice in mine. In your honor and memory I carry on with my lifelong Jazz education as I create new pieces to add to “our” original  exhibition in 2007.  \nAcknowledgements  \nBirmingham Public Library Archives\, Burgin Mathews\, Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of  Central Alabama. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeanna Leithauser Lesley is an avid needlepointer motivated by the power of jazz music\, the perseverance of the civil rights movement and an intention to elevate the perception of needlepoint as an art form through the complexity of stitching portraits.  \nAs a fiber artist\, she is immersed in the idea of weaving together the quiet methodical ways of needlepointing with the often unrestrained methods of jazz music and civil rights. In capturing the drama and emotion of the figure she chooses to stitch\, the finished artwork becomes a distinct freehand homage to the subject of her needlepoint as well as the photographer who took the image. Rejecting the shortcuts of technology\, she relies solely on her training as a visual artist to paint the canvas with yarn using a needle as her brush.  \nLeithauser Lesley has exhibited her distinct portraits in museums\, galleries and cultural art centers throughout the United States. She continues to increase the visibility of resolute individuals who have challenged the world we live in with her unique needlepoints while displaying gratitude for those who came before her. \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \nFrom Tara Stallworth Lee: \nWith immeasurable gratitude to:  \nLeanna Lesley\, for inviting me on this cosmic journey!  \nDr. Frank Adams\, for sharing your love of jazz with so many.  \nSUN RA\, for expanding my universe and showing me a world of magic and possibility. You are an angel.  \n– TSL \n  \n“IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO THAT IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO.” – SUN RA \n  \nAbout the artist: \nTara Stallworth Lee works across mediums with a concentration in analog photography\, papermaking\, collage\, and textiles. Expansion of human dignity is a central theme throughout all of her work which often serves as a catalyst for reflection and inspired action. In 1992\, Tara received her BS in Psychology with a minor in Art from Birmingham-Southern College. She is the 2021/22 recipient of the Alabama State Council on the Arts Gay Burke Fellowship in Photographic Art and a studio resident at Ground Floor Contemporary. In 2023 she became the inaugural artist in residence at Studio By The Tracks\, a studio and gallery for adult artists with autism. For over two decades\, Tara has been teaching for individuals and institutions\, including The Smithsonian Associates and the Alabama Prison Arts and Education Project. Tara lives and works in Birmingham\, Alabama. \n  \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook

SUMMARY:Friends of Cattyshack - The Feline Gaze: Art By & For Cats
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Friends of Cattyshack which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nIf cats were to experience and interact with art the way humans do\, what would they enjoy seeing? What materials\, tools and techniques would they use to make art? What would they want to see on display in their own homes? What subject matter would inspire them? \nThese may seem like absurd questions\, but they allow us to explore our own imagination and see art in a new way. The works in this show represent several local artists’ answers to just those questions. Each one was asked to imagine what art would look and feel like for cats.  \nAll works will also be up for auction online starting Saturday\, June 14th during our annual event\, Rocket City Kittypalooza. Funds raised will go directly toward caring for Cattyshack’s cats and paying vet bills.  \n  \nContributing Artists: \nCats:\n \nChandler \nMargo \nFancy \nFletcher \nMinnie Pearl \nNemo \nHelena \nFinn \nLitha \nMittens\n \n  \nHumans: \nKimberly Muse \nStephanie Flier @deltadogwoodstudio \nStacy Neuberger \nKaio Chambers @Clownovaa \nCarrie Rice @moonmaidenarts  \n  \n  \nAbout the organizer: \nCattyshack Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of shelter cats in Alabama. Our cat lounge\, located right here at Lowe Mill A&E in Studio 1062\, is a resource for fundraising\, socializing our cats\, and increasing adoptions. It is designed to allow humans of all ages to play or relax\, decompress or amp up\, and flat out enjoy cats and kittens that need a forever home. SUMMARY:Garland Farwell - Stars Fell
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Garland Farwell which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nStars Fell is part of an ongoing examination of folk art and quilting as visual  narratives. Crafted from salvaged wood and tin\, the works play a role in the  preservation of memory and the acknowledgement of human experiences through  generations. It is an intersection of aesthetics and function.  \nStars Fell references ‘Stars Fell on Alabama’\, a 1934 novel by Carl Carmer about his  experiences living in Alabama as a young transplant from New York. Writing about  the people\, places\, and events he witnessed\, Carmer illuminated the ordinary and  extraordinary of Alabama. Its myths and legends alongside its everyday life. Similarly\, the Stars Fell exhibit pays homage to Alabama in that the raw material of  the work was found here only. Each board and slat bears witness and tells many  stories. It is my hope that the work reflects back the experiences of multitudes.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAfter many years working as a theater and puppetry artist in New York City I  journeyed to the Alabama Black Belt to explore Folk Art\, Rural Art\, and Outsider Art.  In this journey I’ve found great inspiration and discovered new creative paths. An  intended two-month stay in rural Alabama has morphed into more than 16 years.  My art practice has transformed to reflect this new environment. By adapting the  practical and humble approach to life and creativity of the people of the rural south\,  my process has become more streamlined and the work\, while encountering its  share of challenges\, flows more effortlessly.  \nWhile art and design traditions such as quilting and hex sign painting are major  influences on my work\, the primary materials of my practice are reclaimed wood\,  rusted metals\, and old house paint.   \nI prioritize natural processes of deterioration and decay\, often weaving in fragments  of the scorched and burned. In this regard\, my function is artist as well as principal  organizer. Climate\, the environment and time are my collaborators\, determining  textures\, tones\, and depth of colors.   \nWebsite \nInstagram \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis - Landscapes in Paint and Metal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n  \nThe collaborative exhibit of new work by sculptor Steve Davis and painter Lorrie Lane is all about the southern landscape\, a place filled with trees\, rivers\, lakes\, and humid skies. Davis’s tree and leaf forms seem to move and twist organically\, reflecting the abundant natural growth present in Alabama. Lane’s focus on tree-lined water edges is more about the memory of a moment by the river than a specific place. Informed by the Transcendentalists\, filtered through a contemporary art point of view\, their shared vision creates a contemplative space for appreciating the natural world. \n  \nAbout the artists: \nLorrie Lane is an oil painter living in Tuscaloosa\, AL. She is the owner of Lorrie Lane Studio\, a fine art studio and gallery located in downtown Tuscaloosa. Lane has been painting and exhibiting for over 30 years. Her work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows in the Southeast. She has been represented by galleries in Alabama\, Tennessee\, Georgia\, Florida\, New York\, and Oregon. Her art agent is Victor Fine Art (www.victorfineart.com) and has reproductions through John -Richard. \nAs part of her art career\, Lane has taught art classes with the Birmingham Museum of Art Studio School\, the Alabama Prison Art and Education Project\, and The University of Alabama OLLI program. She was a resident studio artist at the Kentuck Art Center in Northport\, AL from 2010 to 2013 and again from 2016 to 2018. \nLane’s most recent solo exhibits include a show at the Columbus\, MS Arts Council Gallery in 2023 and a dual exhibit with sculptor Steve Davis in 2023 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment in Huntsville\, AL. \nLorrie Lane was born in upstate New York in 1961. After graduating from Smith College in 1983\, she and husband Alan moved to Tuscaloosa\, AL. Their daughter Liz Lane carries on the painting profession. Their sons Charles and Sean are also involved in creative endeavors. \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \nSteve Davis\, born 1951 in Columbus\, OH. Davis earned a B.S. degree from The OhioState University. He’s made objects a good part of his life in a wide variety of media. \nDavis established his studio\, Sunheart Metalworks\, in Northport\, AL in 1993. In his work with metals\, he employs traditional and contemporary metalworking techniques. This work involves passion\, intellect\, and full-force physical input. His pieces range from the sublime to the humorous. Davis enjoys solving the logistical nightmares of large-scale sculptures and public works projects. \nDavis has been a member of the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America since its early days. He is also a member of the Alabama Forge Council. \nInstagram \n
