SUMMARY:Capoeira Classes
DESCRIPTION:Josephine Glass Studio 2008 in energetic Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment invites you to learn Capoeira with our local Professor Tarantula! \nWear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle! \nCapoeira is done in a circle\, with opponents using a combination of kicks\, sweeps\, headbutts\, and other moves to outmaneuver each other. They use deception\, flexibility\, and fluidity to avoid direct force\, and instead flow with their opponent’s movements until the right moment to attack. \nCapoeira is performed to traditional Brazilian songs and musical instruments\, such as the bow\, which provides the rhythm. The music sets the mood and helps participants create a rhythmic dialogue with their bodies\, minds\, and spirits. \nCapoeira emphasizes the importance of the practitioner’s mental and spiritual state\, in which the mind and body can react as one. \nClasses are $15 pay in person.

SUMMARY:Church Goin Mule - Behind the Plow: Songs for Pilgrims Working Their Way Back Home
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Church Goin Mule which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe mule was once a southern fixture\, working for rich folks and poor folks from Virginia to  Texas. Taj Mahal proclaims that blues music was born behind a mule. And so in following the  plow behind that mule\, this exhibit was born working into the world\, hoping to discover and  understand something more about our place.   \nThis show is about the longing that is inherent in the human heart\, the searching that belongs to  all creatures. From the animals that know when to head south\, when to bed down\, when to start  back into the springtime world\, to the human trying to find their way in the land\, to find solace  and assurance in their everyday decisions of living\, to find where their home truly rests.   \nThemes of seeking\, storytelling\, perseverance\, hope\, and heaven; the things that help make up  the human heart – much like the book of Psalms that speak to every human condition\, especially  the ideas of journeying\, endurance\, trust\, and gratitude. The Psalms are also traditionally used in  Hoodoo and Rootwork practice\, underlining the idea that human and nature work together in  knowing and unknowing ways\, that imagination and practice make the world an easier place to  live in and to find love. That stories was everything\, and everything was stories. These paintings  hope to remind the viewer that it takes the natural world\, the supernatural world\, storytelling\, and  one’s own determination to find their way back home.   \nMerrily\, Merrily\,   \nBig Love & Brayerfully\,  \nmule   \n  \nAbout the artist: \nChurch Goin Mule is a southern outsider artist that lives in the Mississippi Delta. She has painted all her life and gets by with a little help from her friends. Thank you for being one of them. You can find more work online at churchgoinmule.com or @churchgoinmule on instagram. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mitch Delk - Mid-Century Modern Moods
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Mitch Delk which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThese three groups of watercolors reflect my interest in mid-century art and design. Each grouping is completely different from the next\, but I hope you can see my hand across the paintings displayed. I don’t like doing the same thing over and over and I like to cultivate different styles that challenge my watercolor painting abilities  \n“Group one” leans on a shape that keeps showing up in my work. A cruciform or tribal shape that includes vertical and horizontal lines intersected by a circle. This is a powerful visual and a shape that is inherently good design. I’ve used this shape to anchor a scratchy group of shapes that appears to be floating in its own space. These shapes carry a deeper meaning for me. You can’t get away from the fact that it carries religious weight. But the main goal is good design and a pleasing picture. \n“Group two” is a series of “nouveau mid-century” paintings that tap into late-50’s to mid-60’s illustration and art seen in magazines and advertising of that era. I like slightly scratchy lines to frame colors and shapes. Again\, my goal was a pleasing picture that is built on good design principles. You will see in the titles of these pieces what they reflect to me. I hope someone with a minimalist or mid-century furnished home recognizes how these abstracts could be used. \n“Group three” are more traditional watercolor paintings. These landscapes use easily recognizable subject matter but have abstract qualities because of the looseness and non-photorealistic approach I use. I am not a big fan of photo-realistic modern watercolor paintings. If that’s the goal\, I say “take a picture”. I strive (as many watercolorists do) to have a fresh and loose feel in my work\, especially those with easily recognizable subject matter. I think this is a worthy life-long quest. \nMy painting philosophy: the least number of strokes usually wins in the battle to achieve a good watercolor. When I paint\, I try to be relaxed. Put on some retro cool jazz and execute my plan. I work from photos for realistic paintings. When it comes to abstract painting – which I dearly love — I have an inspiration and a vision for what I will execute. People ask “What does it mean”? Well\, a lot of the time\, that’s not clear to me as I am concentrating on good design\, use of color and producing something that is pleasing to the eye. But emotion\, things in my subconscious and a bit of romance percolate to the top in most cases. I strongly believe in having different styles. I think this comes from college and my days in advertising. Being able to do several looks for an art project has its advantages. \nI’d like to thank my parents who were both accomplished artists for allowing me to pursue a life in the visual arts. I like to think the Delk’s were a little bit different. I was raised with a very well-rounded set of interests and opportunities. I’m pretty sure going out to draw a barn with your Dad at 6:30 on a Saturday morning is something that none of my friends were doing.  \nAbout the artist: \nI am a Huntsville native and 1988 Graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Graphic Design. While my professional career spanning more than 30 years has been as a designer\, I have become more dedicated to my fine art interests and continue to paint watercolors with a wide variety of subject matter. From commissions for semi-realistic Army helicopter paintings to landscapes\, wildlife and abstract pieces\, I believe my artwork runs the gamut of what watercolor can be. I have a studio here at Lowe Mill A&E. Please come visit me and let’s talk art! I’m in #1044\, North Building\, first floor; near the Cat Lounge. \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)

SUMMARY:Bradley Williams - Walking Home From the Grief Mine
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Bradley Williams which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nIn 2015 standing in an open field from my youth\, consumed with grief and confusion\, I burned all my journals and notebooks. Then the next morning I began writing\, searching for all I lost. Years stack on until the lockdowns of 2020. In the process of another round of loss I began a conversation with myself to help me reconnect to the world—specifically what was before me—my small patch of dirt and the Southern California areas known as the San Gabriel Mountains and the edges of the Western Mojave Desert. These pieces started as a notebook full of small drawings set forth as a single circle drawn through and with a breath\, followed by sketching a simple rendition of the landscape before me\, or what was seen through memory\, then allowing for a lose/free thought to arrive as words in an attempt to stitch up the moment. With encouragement from friends it then began to evolve to these points. \nAbout the artist: \nBradley grew up in a memory he calls Lizard Lope\, Alabama\, more commonly referred to as St. Clair County. He is a member of two labor unions and a graduate of Auburn University. Currently he lives and works in Los Angeles\, California. He walks a lot\, writes poems\, longer stories\, as well as a song two. He quit drinking over a year ago. \n  \nInstagram: @goatswamp \n  \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)

SUMMARY:Kristy Jane - Never Enough
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristy Jane which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025. \n  \nArtist Statement  \nI am a 47-year-old Artist/Mother/Feminist. I appreciate the danger of black widow spiders\, want to comfort anxious squirrel mothers\, and try to see a dead rat on my doorstep as a gift. I don’t want to be a bother. I want to know more than you are willing to share and am tender every chance I get. I am an outlaw. I worry I might also be a flaneur. I want more time and more places to put things. I learned color theory from red  lipstick when I was ten years old. I have knocked knees and fit best into clothing designed for women’s bodies in the 1970’s. My breasts are not self supporting. I do cartwheels and splits whenever I feel like it. My skin remembers things I don’t. I’m touchy.  \nAnd so.  \nMy hands can’t help it. They must put my mark on things to give me the drama and awe I have never gotten enough of or to dig the hole I sometimes need to put my head in. I paint because I need somewhere to put the too-muchness. I make prints because I need somewhere to leave the evidence. I let objects hold ideas too heavy for me to carry alone and I make real fake documents with my camera. It’s all more of a skin than a window–this surface where we meet.  \nI make these things for myself and to be with you.  \nThey are the howls and echoes of a feral domestic.  \n  \nBiography  \nKristy Jane thinks fast and paints slowly with rarely idle incredibly soft hands. Their impulsive visual reference system is embedded in countless layers of nuanced color systems and shameless quotes from art history tangled up with their own to an indecipherable measure. Thought of as an ideal venue for too muchness\, a love affair with oil paint has dominated their practice. However\, the work is often accompanied by objects\, videos\, and other forms of real and make-believe documentation. Through the act of painting\, Jane creates a beautiful chaos to the brink of feeling impossible as if solely for the possibility to navigate their way through it over time. Finishing is thought of as optional due to their simultaneously sticky and slippery intuitive process. Jane is unable to leave their work until the moment they recognize within it\, a complete unknown.  \nIn addition to being a lover\, a mother\, a stranger to no one\, Jane is a studio art instructor in the Department of Art\, Art History and Design at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and leaves their mark on anything that will have it. Their current studio is located in the feral space of a gestalt shift. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nInstagram:  @kristyjanesays

SUMMARY:Billie Hagerman\, Louise Fletcher and Alysha Schilling - Generations: Tripping on Light
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Billie Hagerman\, Louise Fletcher and Alysha Schilling which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from November 27\, 2024 – February 8\, 2025.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nMother\, Daughter and Granddaughter showcasing light in their respective mediums \n  \nBillie Hagerman – Mother \n    I am one of four sisters who grew up on our dad’s cattle ranch in Idaho.  As we grew\, we each developed our own way of expressing our artistic passions. \n     It makes me extremely proud to see the artistic talents of my daughters and grandchildren and now\, even in my great grandchildren.  As for myself\, my husband and I have lived in Klamuth Falls\, Oregon for the past 52 years.  I have studied art at the Klamath Community College as well as under several well-established art instructors.  My art work is displayed in several businesses in Klamath Falls as well as at the Klamath Art Association Gallery in Klamath Falls\, and at the Two Rivers Art Gallery and Gift Shop in Chiloquin\, Oregon.  I am a member of both associations. \n  \nLouise Fletcher – Daughter \n     I am proud to be able to have a studio here in the Historic Lowe Mill\, Studio #2052. \n     My artistic take on Stone Jewelry can be attributed directly to my mother who nurtured my artist side.  I started making jewelry approximately 25 years ago\, starting with the basic stringing of beads and evolving into my current style of creating my own stone pieces with my lapidary equipment\, specializing in Intarsia and wire weaving.  This form of art has become my passion and my stress relief all in one.  You can find me most evenings in front of the tv with wire and stone in my hands.  Each piece I make is a unique piece that will never be repeated so each person can have a one of a kind\, wearable piece of art.  I have been able to attend the William Holland Lapidary Institute in Georgia to learn my latest skills and look forward to going back to fine tune my skills.   \n     Up until I was able to move into my current studio\, I participated in different shows and the Foley Farmers Market for 12 years on the Gulf Coast.  My husband and I moved to Arab 5 years ago and haven’t looked back! \n  \nAlysha Schilling – Granddaughter \n     Originally from Oregon\, I am a photographer driven by my lifelong passion for art.  As a mother of two and a dedicated wife living in North Carolina\, my artistic journey began at a young age\, sitting beside my grandmother as she painted and played the piano.     \n     Influenced by my grandmother’s dedication to nurturing my artistic talents\, I have pursued a fine art degree in film photography (AAS) from a local community college.  My time spent in the darkroom during my studies solidified my love for photography\, inspiring me to embark on a career that allows me to capture the raw beauty of people.  My style is that of a human documenter\, focusing on capturing people and babies with a natural look and employing a light touch in post-editing.  One of my most cherished experiences in photography is documenting newborns\, where I feel honored to capture the precious moments of a new life.     \n     Through my lens\, I strive to create timeless and heartfelt images that resonate with my audience. \n\n  \n  \n

I refer to this asphalt strip as the “Who’s Who Highway” of fast-food restaurants and big box stores.  \nWhile driving down one night\, I noticed a couple of Hooters letters out\, and one said\, ‘ters.’ I got such a kick out of it that I photographed it.  \nEvery once in a while\, I drive down this strip to see if any lights are out. And let me say that the Who’s Who Highway never fails to have a light or two out. Now\, it has become some sort of a hunt.  \nI hope you enjoyed these as much as I had fun finding them.  \n*These were all taken in the Huntsville/ Madison\, Alabama\, area except for Macy’s\, JCPenney\, and On the Border\, which were taken in Allentown\, PA.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nHi! I am Cristina Byrne. I like to use a camera to express\, highlight\, and bring attention to certain things I see.  \nThroughout college\, I would walk around with a point-and-shoot and photograph college parties. Still\, I only started getting serious about it once I took a seasonal job with the Binghamton Mets\, The Double-A MiLB affiliate to the New York Mets\, as their Creative/Marketing Assistant\, where I was also the fan photographer during the 2012 season. There\, I fell in love with capturing the atmosphere of minor-league baseball.  \nYou can find me running around Toyota Field as the Rocket City Trash Pandas Team Photographer and managing the assignment desk at WHNT News 19. \n  \nInstagram:  @cristinarbyrne \nTo find the the gallery in Lowe Mill A&E\, click MORE INFO below (Tickets are NOT required.)

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 8 from 5-7 pm. \nArtist statement: \nI choose the format of the large scale color woodcut because it best suits my energy charged\, caffeine induced\, aggressive approach to image making.  Charles Bukowski\, Ms Pacman\, Phillip Guston and Neil Blender are among my influences. Somewhere along the way\, I realized that I could accomplish my goals as an artist without enslaving myself to the meticulous obsessions of “traditional” printmaking. I don’t slow down to make perfect drawings or to finesse my color registration. I hammer out the carvings and blast out the prints\, and move on to the next print\, the next day. My primary concern is to create a strong visual infused with a sense of satirical humor\, in other words I like to tell funny stories using funny pictures. \nArtist bio: \nSean Star Wars lives in Laurel\, MS with his wife and five children.  Sean earned his MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. In addition to making woodcuts for over thirty years\, Sean has been an Adjunct Professor\, a janitor and a used car salesman. Sean currently works fulltime as a printmaker and he makes about a dozen visiting artist appearances a year at many of the nations’ leading art programs.  Sean is a proud member of the legendary Outlaw Printmakers and his work is in numerous public and private collections.   Star Wars’ work can be seen on book covers\, album covers\, magazines\, television programs\, films and commercials.  He is currently embarking on his most challenging project ever\, a woodcut a week “FOR LIFE”.  Sean drinks more Mountain Dew than anyone who has ever lived and he can beat you at Ms. Pacman.  \n  \nInstagram: @seanstarwars \nWebsite: Woodcut Funhouse
