SUMMARY:Beth McKay - Depression Incarnate
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Beth McKay which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from November 26\, 2025 – February 28\, 2026.  Lowe Mill A&E invites patrons and art lovers to join us for Open Studio Night\, a building-wide experience when our over 150 studios will be open to the public.  The evening also includes receptions for all seven of our gallery spaces. This series gives the public a chance to meet and interact with visiting artists and discuss their work as it is on display and available for purchase. Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, February 28 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nDepression Incarnate is an exploration of pain\, grief\, and heartbreak — a reflection of how I process complex emotions through art. For me\, painting is not just creation; it’s communication. Art allows me to express feelings that are too heavy or complicated to put into words\, transforming sorrow into something visual\, tangible\, and healing.  \nThe majority of my work consists of surrealist self-portraits that embody emotional states rather than likeness. Each piece represents a chapter of my healing journey — navigating loss\, divorce\, and rebirth. After the sudden loss of my father\, I turned to painting as a way to process the overwhelming grief that followed. My oil on canvas Underneath represents that experience\, portraying myself in contemplation of death\, grief\, and the cyclical nature of existence and reincarnation.  \nWhen I went through a divorce in 2020\, I once again turned inward\, using art to process heartache\, loss\, and newfound freedom. In Organs\, a nude female figure removes her lungs\, tongue\, and brain — symbols of suffocation\, silence\, and overthinking — yet keeps her heart intact\, a quiet act of resilience and hope. Wrapped in a vine of white flowers\, she slowly unravels herself from the binds that once held her.  \nIn Wallflower\, another self-portrait\, I explore the feeling of invisibility and the process of re-emergence. The figure stitches her own heart back together with needle and thread as she begins to separate herself from the wallpaper that once concealed her\, symbolizing self-recovery and rediscovery.  \nPoppy Heart may appear as a heart blooming with delicate flowers\, but the poppy carries deeper meaning — beauty intertwined with danger\, addiction\, and loss. This piece is a tribute to loved ones lost to addiction\, and to the complex love that remains for those still fighting it. To honor their memory\, 20% of the proceeds from Poppy Heart will be donated to Not One More Alabama\, a nonprofit that provides education\, hope\, and compassionate support to families affected by addiction.  \nMy art comes directly from the heart. It is born from grief but rooted in resilience — a visual testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of creation. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nBeth McKay is a multidisciplinary artist based in Huntsville\, Alabama\, where she has lived most of her life. With over 25 years of experience\, Beth has honed her skills in oil painting\, watercolor\, and screen printing\, crafting deeply personal and evocative works. A graduate of the University of Montevallo (2002) with a concentration in painting and a minor in graphic design\, Beth further pursued her passion for art education at the University of Alabama in Huntsville\, earning a degree in Art Education in 2016 to foster the love of art in young minds.  \nAs a member of the Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art (ALWCA)\, Beth has been an active voice in the regional art community. Her studio is located at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment\, where she continues to create and experiment. Her work is often inspired by the legendary Frida Kahlo\, with Beth herself serving as the main subject of her pieces. Through self-portraiture\, Beth explores themes of identity\, vulnerability\, depression and the female experience.  \nBeth’s recent works have been showcased in numerous exhibitions\, including the Curated Gallery show No Place Like Home (August-October 2025) and The Feminine—Body\, Mind\, and Spirit at Alabama A&M University in 2025. Her painting “Organs” was featured in The Feminine I ALWCA Art Show at Alabama A&M. In 2023\, her paintings “Poppy Heart” and “Cage” were displayed in the Juried Art Teachers’ Biennial Exhibition at the Huntsville Museum of Art.  \nBeth has also contributed to public art projects\, including Time for aRt EVOLUTION\, a collaborative public art display in downtown Huntsville in 2020. Her creative journey has earned her several accolades\, including second place for Mechanical Owl at the UAH Graphic Design Art Show and an Honorable Mention for Underneath at the UAH Juried Art Show in 2017.  \nThrough her work\, Beth McKay continues to challenge the boundaries of self-expression and create art that speaks to both personal and universal experiences. \n

SUMMARY:Leigh Ann Edmonds - The Memory Wall
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by  Leigh Ann Edmonds which will be on view in the First Floor West Gallery from November 26\, 2025 – February 28\, 2026. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nThe Memory Wall is an exploration with how we use photography as memory\, connection  and conversation as she emphasizes how photographs are the memories we leave behind  after we are gone. They become stories of our life experiences\, memories of past travels\,  and they document loved ones we once knew.  \nLeigh Ann is wanting viewers to reflect on how we often use photographs to build  memories and stories to share with others. It is through photo collage\, traditional matte  and frame and her classic approach to photography with vintage film cameras that she  wants others to feel they have stepped into another era of photography.  \nHer use of black and white film helps to create a nostalgic and reminiscent approach of  today’s modern world we live in. The images are a continuation of what was and what is and how our memory connects the past to the present. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLeigh Ann Edmonds is a documentary photographer from Birmingham\, Alabama. Her work  predominantly explores the land\, culture and people of the American South and is often  described as timeless\, gritty and soulful. Leigh Ann is the 2025 recipient for the Gay Burke Memorial Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. She studied under the late Gay Burke at UA and obtained a BA in  Studio Art from the University of Alabama in 2004 with a concentration in photography.  \nLeigh Ann believes that her work is a journal of her life\, the people she meets and the  places she explores and hopes to document in a way that helps to commemorate and  preserve the era in which she lives.

SUMMARY:Alejandra González Díaz - Seguimos Aquí | a Puerto Rican Art Show
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Alejandra González Díaz which will be on view in the Second Floor Connector Gallery from November 26\, 2025 – February 28\, 2026. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nPrideful celebration meets raw historical introspection in Seguimos Aquí\, the first solo exhibit by multidisciplinary artist Alejandra González Díaz. This Puerto Rican art show has a central message: it embraces the dynamic spirit of Puerto Rican culture while inviting viewers to confront and reflect on its complex and often painful history.\nCurated with passion and purpose\, this exhibition fuses visual installations that explore both triumphant cultural narratives\, such as the preservation of traditions and indigenous ancestry\, and challenging episodes of the past\, including eugenics\, mass sterilizations\, and colonization. Witness how each artwork\, enriched by Hispanic\, Indigenous\, and African influences\, reflects a community that has transformed adversity into resilience and hope.\nAbout the artist:\nAlejandra González Díaz (b. Caguas\, Puerto Rico) is an interdisciplinary artist and model based in Atlanta\, raised in Tampa. She centers Puerto Rican culture and her life experiences in her work. Alejandra creates visual art\, developing a neo-expressionist and surrealist style across acrylic paintings\, papier-mâché masks\, and small sculptures. Influenced by artists like Frida Kahlo\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Salvador Dali\, and Gustav Klimt\, her pieces explore survival\, identity\, and communal care\, with art serving as testimony and a lifeline amid mental health and life challenges.\nAfter moving to Atlanta to pursue art full-time\, Alejandra broadened her practice to include performance‑inflected projects and collaborative shoots as extensions of her visual language. She creates art from a place of radical honesty\, inviting others to start where they are\, keep going\, and find strength in shared creativity.\n

SUMMARY:John Simmons - A Ritual of Renewal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by John Simmons which will be on view in the Third Floor West Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nJohn Simmons is a collage artist born and raised in Jacksonville\, AL. Years of experimenting with old magazines\, found ephemera\, and personal mark-making led him to discover that the simple act of cutting\, tearing\, and reassembling was a form of personal alchemy. Each piece is born from a spontaneous gesture rather than a preconceived concept. \nHis work is rooted in catharsis through process. He enjoys taking bits and pieces of contrasting shapes\, textures\, and colors to create a wholly new identity. The studio becomes a zone of release\, where time collapses and decisions are made in the moment. His compositions emerge organically as he follows intuition—no underlying narrative guides the hand. The resulting collages are traces of an emotional state\, snapshots of creative necessity rather than coded symbols demanding interpretation. \nOften asked if his works contain hidden metaphors\, John insists that the art rarely carries a deeper meaning beyond the joy and urgency of creation. By stripping away intentional symbolism\, John invites viewers to experience the pure dynamism of collage\, allowing them to create their own interpretations. He views his work as an unfiltered act of creation\, a ritual of renewal. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJohn Simmons was born and raised in Jacksonville\, AL\, and graduated from Jax State University with a BFA in Graphic Design. He received 2 silver Addy’s and 1 Gold Addy for work created as an undergraduate. He has also completed the print campaign and presented work in two different gallery showcases (Leylines – National Juried Drawing Competition\, Paint Rock – Drawing Knowledge from Nature). His call to create is centered around sharing his true thoughts and feelings while striving to understand and relate to others. \nHe has a keen sense of design and its relation to form and function. His mixed media approach focuses on juxtaposition and attention to detail. His body of work displays a true purgative release of thoughtful energy that is both powerful and refined. Working to invite divergent perspectives\, his work bears witness to a melting pot of ideas and the various ways we perceive those ideas.

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nI have been exhibiting my art for twenty years. Yet\, still\, I feel as if I am opening my heart  and allowing everyone to view my soul.  \nThe Art is Me. I took a DNA test and discovered my ancestry is African\, Native American\,  French\, Welsh\, German\, and Swiss. This revelation made me compassionate for the  traumatic journey that begets my diverse and complex heritage.  \nI illustrate raw emotions conveyed through body language. Emotions are universal. They  transcend cultural boundaries and connect us all. As an artist\, I aspire to motivate others  to embrace their unique heritage while fostering a connection to humanity through our  shared emotional experiences.  \nArt is like looking into a mirror. So\, though I paint through the gaze of a black woman  – when my art resonates with your soul\, the art becomes a reflection of you. And  because of the emotional connection\, you can look at my art and honestly say\, The Art is Me! \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLaShonda Scott Robinson is a self-taught watercolor artist who calls Tuscaloosa\, AL  home.  \nLaShonda captures deep\, often unspoken emotions through body language. She chooses  not to paint faces\, believing that while our expressions might hide our feelings\, our bodies  always reveal our true selves.  \nHer art has been featured in Momentum National MS Society Magazine\, Design for  Dyslexia 2024 Show House in Tuscaloosa\, AL\, a feature on Tabitha Brown’s Very Good  Mondays\, Tina Knowles (The mother of Beyoncé) WACO Theater Wearable Art Gala\,  Judge Mathis E! Network series Mathis Family Matters\, Descendants: The Rise of Red\,  and many solo exhibitions.  \nLaShonda is happily married with one son. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Monica Yother - Between Notes
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Monica Yother which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit: \nFor over a decade\, Monica Yother has painted dance figures that focus on movement\, emotion\, strength\, and grace- capturing the dance itself rather than the dancer. In this new body of work\, however\, she shifts her gaze beyond the performance to the performer. On stage\, the dancer often becomes nearly transparent-what we witness on stage is the story and the character brought to life through choreography and costume\, rather than the individual behind it. Yother is intrigued by the concept of “the transparent dancer\,” aiming to reveal a glimpse of the person beneath the performance. \nRather than present the dancers on a stage with wooden floor and fabric curtains\, she chose to suggest the world that the dancer’s character might inhabit. Instead of a heavy curtain that hides the scene from the audience\, we see semi-transparent fabric that flows behind and in some cases in front of the figure\, to suggest the transparency of the dancer. \nIt is the intention of this selection of works to look at ballet through a different lens\, and observe dancers caught between movement\, between notes. \n  \nAbout the Artist: \nMonica Yother is primarily an oil painter\, focusing on dance figures\, though she does enjoy painting animals and birds. Since 2008 she has been the resident artist for Huntsville Ballet\, creating art work for the organization that has become the brand. She is currently working on an MFA with a concentration in painting and drawing. Monica lives in Huntsville\, Alabama and has a studio where she teaches classes and workshops. \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nVolume of Movements is a five piece series inspired by the core elements in my life- music\, love\, triumph\, failure and growth through said movements. These motions inspire and evoke the physical movement of paint on canvas that becomes a panacea in color\, shape and texture.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nAs a young man\, Robby chose the Culinary Arts as his life work. In 2020\, after stepping away from Chef life\, Robby began transitioning his creative energy into a different kind of art. Plates shifted to canvases; layers of color and texture replaced the aromas of food; and new ways to process life’s experiences were born. Art has always chosen Robby\, whether in the kitchen or in the studio\, and while the forms may be different\, the results are the same. \n

The activities night became a political discourse with the community members attending. Nights have been spent making protest poster for rallies and letting people voice their views through art. Pieces in this show came from group efforts. Promoting mutual aide fundraisers. Using words mixed with visual images to spread awareness for social injustices. Even voicing that our community did not want someone who so happy for genocide performing in our area and sharing the art to help promote canceling their performance. \nArt can make a difference\nIt can move\nIt can heal\nUse your expressive ways to change things\nDo it.\n  \nAbout the artist: \nGregory Price\n*gory price\n*rogue atom\nT shirt aficionado\nDaily doodler\nAging punk rocker\nPoor and unknown\nLoving life\nAs a mountain side dweller\nNear Birmingham\nWith my cooler than me kid\n	Notice to Visitors\nArt is vastly different and can be edgy in both form and content. SUMMARY:Jim White - Anything Can Be Redeemed
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Jim White which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from September 24 – November 22\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nSome years back I shipped a show of my assemblage makings over to Dublin\, Ireland to appear in this high dollar art gallery on the grounds of Trinity College. \nOn the customs form the powers that be asked for a detailed breakdown of what I was shipping\, so I just wrote ‘garbage’. \nSee\, when I was a kid I got yelled at a lot for digging through other people’s garbage piles. Some said it was unsanitary\, others undignified. I didn’t much care what they thought\, as certain items in said garbage piles spoke to me\, asking to be liberated from their ignominious fate. \nOf course\, they got a pejorative term for people who dig in garbage piles\, dragging home mountains of worthless\, discarded objects-they call those folks ‘hoarders’. There’s popular intervention shows on TV that follow the sad lifestyles of such individuals. I watched a few episodes and winced from time to time. \nDespite certain superficial similarities\, I surmised that I’m definitely not a hoarder. Why? Because it’s not hoarding if you put what you find to use-which I do. Approaching it that way\, you’re not some sick-o digging in filthy garbage piles\, you’re just a low income artist out there collecting free art supplies.  \nAnd after three or four decades of gathering up quite the mountain of such free art supplies\, I find myself in possession of a truly magnificent stash of unwanted American esoterica. And from time to time when I do dare venture into certain wildly overcrowded rooms here in this old farm house where I live\, said items of esoterica\, they start calling out\, like sirens luring me nearer the rocks of creativity.   \nNext thing I know I got a bottle of wood glue in one hand and a C-clamp in the other. Paint brushes are brandished willy-nilly as visual connections are hastily forged. It’s a form of low brow magic.   \nI never set out with any vision or plan-I’m not the slightest bit conceptually minded. There is no deep message intended by this work\, with the exception of the notion that given the right circumstances\, anything\, living or not\, can be redeemed. \nSo far as I can tell\, I was put here on this earth to manifest those circumstances.  And so I do. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nThere’s no conventional marketplace category that even remotely describes what I do\, unless consummate outsider could be considered a commercial genre.  \nFor the last thirty years I’ve split my time and creative vision between working as a musician (eight studio albums\, five side projects)\, a visual artist (exhibitions both nationally and internationally) and a writer (2 books\, 1 Pushcart Prize for short fiction). \nAt the unlikely age of thirty eight I was “discovered”\, then championed by David Byrne\, of Talking Heads fame. Prior to that I worked in obscurity\, so it was a big paradigm shift. \nSongs of mine have been featured in film and TV\, including prime slots in the Breaking Bad franchise. My debut novel Incidental Contact was described by Mojo Magazine as “unputdownable”.  \nI live a fairly reclusive life out in rural Georgia\, and am father to two amazing daughters\, one of which is rising country music star Willow Avalon. \n  \nhttps://jimwhitemusic.net/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/jimwhiteofficial \n	Notice to Visitors\nArt is vastly different and can be edgy in both form and content. Queer. \nI’ve worn them all—and now I wear them with purpose. \nThis exhibit is a meditation on otherness. \nIt asks us to see with new eyes\, to question the boundaries of belonging\, and to find beauty in what defies convention. \nIt holds space for grief and becoming—for memory\, mystery\, and transformation. \nTo be odd is to walk a path all your own. \nTo be weird is to bend the pattern into something new. \nTo be queer is to live truthfully without waiting for permission. \nThe Weird\, The Odd\, The Queer is a tribute to those who came before: the rebels\, the romantics\, the survivors. It is a celebration of queer existence in all its complexity\, and a call to Resist\, Remember & Rise.  \n  \n About the Artists: \nThe Eclectic Frog Collective is a queer-led group of Southern artists who explore themes of transformation\, resistance\, and survival through mixed media\, sculpture\, photography\, installation\, and performance. \nLed by Aaron Kilgore—from Studio RR5A at Lowe Mill A&E\, the collective blends political urgency with honest personal stories. Their work invites you to see the beauty that grows on the margins. \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nTea in Istanbul is a visual diary—an abstracted love letter to a city that overwhelmed my senses and opened my eyes. This collection reflects on my time as a foreign painter immersed in the rich\, layered world of Istanbul: a place where ancient empires meet modern rhythms\, and where every street corner holds a burst of color\, scent\, or sound. \nThrough vibrant palettes\, textured surfaces\, and dynamic forms\, these works capture the chaos and cohesion of a city alive with history and daily ritual. From the deep reds of street-side spices to the pastel shimmer of tile mosaics\, from the tangled geometry of architecture to the soft intimacy of sharing tea\, each piece is a translation of sensory experience into visual language. \nThe paintings shift between representation and abstraction\, reflecting how I navigated this unfamiliar city—sometimes clearly\, sometimes intuitively. Wandering through Istanbul felt like moving through a living mosaic\, a patchwork of empires and cultures\, where cats nap beside centuries-old ruins and the scent of baklava drifts past contemporary storefronts. \nAt the heart of it all: tea. A moment of stillness and warmth amid the movement. This show is a meditation on discovery\, observation\, and the beauty of getting lost. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nLiz Onken is an abstract expressionist painter based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing from Auburn University and continued her studies in Rome\, where she deepened her understanding of art history and traditional techniques. \nNamed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2018 by World Art Collector magazine\, Liz is known for her bold abstract paintings\, as well as her mixed media and textile-based works. Her art has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and abroad. \nAfter years of working and studying in other cities\, Liz is excited to return to her hometown\, where she continues to create and exhibit work inspired by both her Southern roots and international experiences. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kristin Hudson - Everyday Rainbows
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kristin Hudson which will be on view in the North Floor Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nInspired by the sun shining through rainbow window film\, the idea for “Everyday Rainbows” began when I captured pictures of sun painted rainbows across my bathroom sink vanity and evolved into an exploration of color.  \nWhile studying for my art degree\, I discovered my love of color went deeper than the clothes I wore or how I decorated. I began utilizing color to tell a story\, emphasize a design\, or create an emotion. Combining those colors with simple shapes allowed me to think minimally while making a big impact. As I was naturally drawn to bright\, neon\, and iridescent colors\, it steadily became a focus in my art to incorporate eye catching color. \nEvery piece of art you see here is created from just 3 colors: pink\, yellow\, and blue. By limiting myself\, I explored\, experimented\, and showed the versatility of color. It is satisfying to see the way combinations\, layers\, and techniques\, can elicit vastly different reactions. I tried new\, experimental styles of creation with media outside my norm to further explore the opportunities these 3 colors could provide. \nAs you peruse the gallery\, you will see the breadth of opportunity within these 3 colors. Though each start from the same place\, the results can be vastly different.  \n  \nAbout the artist: \nKristin is a Creative Marketing Manager\, Graphic Designer\, and Printmaker. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Louisville and a B.A. in Studio Art/Graphic Design from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. As a Graphic Designer and Marketer\, she gets to create corporate design including brand development\, campaigns\, documents\, software design\, and more. In her personal art\, she focuses on illustration and branding. As a Printmaker\, she primarily works in linoleum\, woodblock\, and screen printing. Kristin has studio 2054 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment where she is lucky enough to be able to work remotely\, create during off hours\, experiment with all kinds of different art styles/mediums\, and enjoy a community of artists full of encouragement and motivation. \n  \n@kdesignartstudio \nwww.kdesignartstudio.com  \n  \n

Come out\, enjoy a pleasant evening\, and maybe you’ll find that special piece of art that speaks to you!  The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nConditions for Progress is a multimedia solo exhibition containing sculptures made from plaster\, glass\, cheesecloth\, wood and more. This exhibition is a body of work reflecting on the presence and importance of the physicality held in objects. These altered and re-contextualized forms represent the dense honesty three dimensions can have\, while simultaneously being multifaceted conceptually. Conditions for Progress is an inside look into how as an artist\, I know to process and reimagine life beyond the language I speak and represent it in sculpture. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nMy name is Nate Husser from Madison\, Alabama. I am a 2025 Graduate from the University of North Alabama where I majored in Sculpture. I have been practicing and creating in different mediums of art from photography\, filmmaking\, to collage the last 10 years of my life. Sculpture has taken over as my main form of creative expression and fascination. With my sculpture I am able to create\, replicate\, and alter different forms to change or elevate their meaning. This being said\, I consider myself a conceptual artist. I am always questioning and trying to derive new meaning from my surroundings.  \n

SUMMARY:Kathryn Williamson - Climate Women
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Kathryn Williamson which will be on view in the First Floor Ramp Gallery from July 16 – September 20\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, September 20 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \nI believe that healing the climate is connected with healing ourselves\, which includes listening to those small seeds of yearning we have\, to share ourselves and live out loud from our passions. I always loved astrophysics and art\, and the climate crisis asks me to bring both the scientific and artistic parts of myself forward to be more whole. I’ve spent much of the last decade as an academic\, an astronomy educator\, hardly painting at all. This “Climate Women” series is a gift to myself. It has accompanied a larger shift in my life of transitioning from academia to independent consulting\, from frantic rushing to being more intentional with my time\, and from following rigid perceptions of what a “professional” does to listening more to the messy\, creative parts of myself. Painting these women while listening to recordings of them speaking on stage or in interviews has become a meditation practice for me to listen\, learn\, create\, and connect. \nI originally started this series by painting authors from the book All We Can Save\, but since the book has about fifty authors\, I started to bounce around. In no particular order\, I just followed my whims for topics that caught my eye. I expanded to women I know personally and/or learned about through other efforts. I have many more portraits I’d like to paint\, and I made more paintings for this series than I’m sharing in public. This is for a few important reasons. The first has to do with consent. A big part of this effort is the practice of respect and reciprocity. I vowed from the beginning that I would only display the paintings if I received explicit permission. There are a handful of women I painted who I was not able to reach\, and it was not for lack of trying! For example\, I can see that a few of the women are extremely busy taking brave actions\, and after brief attempts to contact them\, I thought it might be best to just let them be so they can focus. Others seem to have totally disappeared from contact. It gives me a sinking feeling. I wonder\, why? Did their activism bring them into harm’s way? Are they okay? There is only one painting where I got an explicit “not at this time” response. There is also one painting that is just bad; I’m too embarrassed to share it with anyone. It was one of the first ones I started\, and I could feel myself rushing\, trying to “accomplish” the big task ahead. I keep it as a reminder to take my time and prioritize investing in process and quality. Then there are the paintings where I did invest careful attention to detail\, and I’m very proud of the resulting quality\, and I still couldn’t reach the woman depicted\, so I sit with that feeling of not getting what I thought I wanted\, without getting that external validation. And that\, too\, is a learning practice for me. \nThis collection is not at all representative of the many women who show up to help make a better world. In general\, compared to men\, women are more likely to recognize climate change as a serious problem\, more concerned global climate change will harm them personally\, and believe that people will have to make major lifestyle changes to reduce the effects of global climate change (Pew Research Global Attitudes Survey 2015). While women suffer disproportionately from resource scarcity and natural disasters resulting from climate change\, women also hold significant community and ecological knowledge\, can mobilize households\, and can safeguard health measures such as sanitation and forest regeneration. This is why gender equity is listed as one of the key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \nWhether you are inspired by the women featured in this collection\, other women helping their communities\, and/or all the awesome non-women activists out there helping to envision and generate a healthy\, equitable\, and sustainable future\, I hope you find your unique role in the climate movement. We need everyone. We need you! \nOriginal paintings are not for sale. See ursagaia.com if you would like to purchase a 18×24-inch mosaic poster print of the collection. Proceeds will be donated to the All We Can Save Project. \n

SUMMARY:Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis - Landscapes in Paint and Metal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition round includes works provided by Lorrie Lane and Steve Davis which will be on view in the Third Floor East Gallery from April 30 – July 12\, 2025. The Open Studio Night reception is Saturday\, July 12 from 5-7 pm. \n  \nAbout the exhibit: \n  \nThe collaborative exhibit of new work by sculptor Steve Davis and painter Lorrie Lane is all about the southern landscape\, a place filled with trees\, rivers\, lakes\, and humid skies. Davis’s tree and leaf forms seem to move and twist organically\, reflecting the abundant natural growth present in Alabama. Lane’s focus on tree-lined water edges is more about the memory of a moment by the river than a specific place. Informed by the Transcendentalists\, filtered through a contemporary art point of view\, their shared vision creates a contemplative space for appreciating the natural world. \n  \nAbout the artists: \nLorrie Lane is an oil painter living in Tuscaloosa\, AL. She is the owner of Lorrie Lane Studio\, a fine art studio and gallery located in downtown Tuscaloosa. Lane has been painting and exhibiting for over 30 years. Her work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows in the Southeast. She has been represented by galleries in Alabama\, Tennessee\, Georgia\, Florida\, New York\, and Oregon. Her art agent is Victor Fine Art (www.victorfineart.com) and has reproductions through John -Richard. \nAs part of her art career\, Lane has taught art classes with the Birmingham Museum of Art Studio School\, the Alabama Prison Art and Education Project\, and The University of Alabama OLLI program. She was a resident studio artist at the Kentuck Art Center in Northport\, AL from 2010 to 2013 and again from 2016 to 2018. \nLane’s most recent solo exhibits include a show at the Columbus\, MS Arts Council Gallery in 2023 and a dual exhibit with sculptor Steve Davis in 2023 at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment in Huntsville\, AL. \nLorrie Lane was born in upstate New York in 1961. After graduating from Smith College in 1983\, she and husband Alan moved to Tuscaloosa\, AL. Their daughter Liz Lane carries on the painting profession. Their sons Charles and Sean are also involved in creative endeavors. \nWebsite \nInstagram \nFacebook \n  \nSteve Davis\, born 1951 in Columbus\, OH. Davis earned a B.S. degree from The OhioState University. He’s made objects a good part of his life in a wide variety of media. \nDavis established his studio\, Sunheart Metalworks\, in Northport\, AL in 1993. In his work with metals\, he employs traditional and contemporary metalworking techniques. This work involves passion\, intellect\, and full-force physical input. His pieces range from the sublime to the humorous. Davis enjoys solving the logistical nightmares of large-scale sculptures and public works projects. \nDavis has been a member of the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America since its early days.
